NY Times map: Trump/Clinton

That's out of style. Liberalism now means you cry. Us mean sheet wearers had the nerve to vote against their sweet little fairy tale.

If you're not crying, New York and LA won't have you.

More people voted for Hillary than Trump. The 85/15 illustration of territory is intellectually dishonest if you are trying to pass this off as a major majority. It isn't. I agree that Republicans presently have the upper hand in elected officials. But to imply that there is a major rout of the democrats because the republicans are spaced further apart is a stretch. The conservatives have the edge right now. But that could change in a single election cycle.
The media out-sourced their jobs and responsibility to the dems and lost, now their crying foul. The media (and Calif and New York) are NO LONGER in charge of this country. The rational people are.....empty space and all!

Ok...you are correct...you win the argument I never entered. But the 85/15 map is a deceptive attempt at making things appear more significant than reality.

One reason I don't last on these threads is that a single point(that the 85/15 map was deceptive) ...a point devoid of any political motivations (I disliked both candidates)...and a thousand other issues not encompassed in the original assertion is argued. Many I agree with. The conservatives have the upper hand in elected officials...I know that...not my point. I understand the reason for the electoral system and support it. It is a great victory for Trump and totally satisfying for his supporters. I get all that.

The problem is that in the political ideology game you guys have lumped your entire political perspective into one little neat winner take all package. You have no ability to look at a single issue and see anything other than all good or all bad. One little minutia...the honesty of seeing that 85/15 map as NOT showing some kind of nationwide landslide becomes an affront on your entire belief system. You have no way of looking at it in an honest way without believing that you're going against the whole.

So you argue things that aren't even the point because your ideology melds your thoughts so compactly that you can't differentiate a single point from your entire system of beliefs. And that's what absolute ideology creates. Noise and friction where none should exist.

Cartogram maps would be a better way of looking at this. A cartogram can be used in this case to better represent data on population and vote distribution. I found these at http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/2016/

Typical map by state looks like this:

statemap512.png

Adjusted by population:

statepop512.png

Adjusted by electoral college:

stateelec512.png

Results by county:

countymaprb512.png

County map adjusted by population:

countycartrb512.png

A shaded map with purples to show how the vote split by county. Brighter reds and blues for landslide wins, purple is used to show counties where the vote was close:

Now adjusted by population:

Raoul's maps illustrate my point perfectly. You have to adjust the map by population to get the true picture. Why? Because people vote and fields of corn don't.

one little neat winner take all package

That's how things generally work. All things.

Fair or not, warm and fuzzy or not, at the end of the day somebody gets whatever the fight was over and somebody does not. That's competition. That's America.

I'll add this to my list of posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the original argument.

The Republicans control the White House, Congress, the majority of governors offices and state legislatures.

What more do you want to prove how dominating this is?

The only things the dems and liberals have are all the cities and left coast. All those elitist and urban folks who need that govt titty.

The argument is to stand snootily above us rednecks as we hoot and holler about delivering these modern day sissies a stunning defeat.

Stand and thrust that nose up as high as you want. We'll hoot and holler as loud as we want.

I thought you felt there was no way the Republicans would ever win again, game over as the Democrats give everything away for free. What changed?

This is like saying Marshalls 1996 win over Montana wasn't all that great because the score waas 49-29. Sure, Montana got some late yards and Bobby took Moss out halfway through the third but Montana scored 29 and lost by less than three touchdowns.

This was an ass whipping. The Democrats are shell shocked and figuring out what to do.

I thought we were going to lose.

1)Hillary was a crap candidate and a crook. People saw through that
2)Obamacare hosed us over
3)We showed up to vote because we are tired of all this crap
4)We had a fighter who fought back

What changed is the level of white guilt has lessened. Price was paid with the 8 year novelty act. People figured it was time to get back to business now. And Hillary Clinton's not black. Tried to sound like it, but she's not.

Again...let me repeat...it's the map. The map is deceptive. That doesn't negate what the conservatives did. It doesn't negate the electoral victory...again (read that with Forest Gump's voice). It doesn't negate house and senate flip. This was an outstanding conservative victory. But that doesn't make it a landslide like the map implies. The popular vote was nearly even with the slight edge to the democrats. That doesn't illustrate landslide victory. Enjoy but don't fool yourself. The conservatives will be the target over the next four years now. The media will be ruthless. Every word Trump utters will be taken to task and twisted. If you think that 85/15 map gives you a comfortable lead you're fooling yourself. The map looked nearly identical under the Obama victory and it was more prolific than Trump's in both popular and electoral votes.

All the dems have are the cities? Come on man...cities mean people. People vote. Corn fields don't. This election was a backlash victory. Enjoy it. It was an amazing turn around and conservatives have every right to be happy. But it was also a perfect storm. Don't count on that every election and don't fool yourself into believing that this can't be reversed and reversed quickly.

I know. Unlike Democrats we hold our people accountable. We get mad we will stay home. Democrats don't.

The Repbulicans might not ever win a popular vote again. That is why we have the electoral college. The founders didn't want some elites from New York and weirdos from California controlling everything.

Ohio State only beating Michigan State 17-16, now that was a shitty win. Better than a loss, but not much.

If they beat the hell out of Michigan next week it'll be OK, but yesterday was pitiful. The offense sucks in bad weather. Barrett's a Texas man. Not made for the November Midwest. Here we sit in Ohio having to hope for a decent day next Saturday or we will have emptied our wallets on yet another egg like last year's miserable loss to MSU that flushed the season down the toilet.

17-16 over MSU is shitty. Not this.

I agree with this. The electoral system is an example of how intuitive our framers were. They understood that the various interests of our nation weren't just an individual thing but regional...such as north vs south or coastal vs interior. These areas represent totally different political views. Concentrated populations within a certain area (think left coast) could control elections at the expense of the rest of the country who think very differently. So the concentration of citizenry within an area (and representing a single ideology) wouldn't give fair representation to the entire country. This fear of the "tyranny of the majority" was seen by our framers and illustrates how smart and perceptive those dudes really were.

You voted for a guy that half the RNC attempted to keep from winning. So, did you vote for hillary? That's what I thought.
I actually didn't vote for trump or Hillary. And the difference is everyone knew half the rnc didn't want trump the dnc feigned neutrality

Those of us that were paying close attention didn't need the leaked emails to know about the DNC. Follow the money, as always. But it's nothing new, the RNC, for example, was in favor of W over McCain. McCain was cooked as soon as he came out with a platform of campaign finance reform.

There are a lot fewer people that actually pay close attention than there are thatbthinknthe know what's going on

Winning is the most important, that's why. Not sidebar stuff that nobody cares about. McCain was a loser just like the other 17 people Trump beat in the primaries.

Hillary would have beat them down, because they would have stood there on the stage and wilted in her presence. Trump fought and beat the old hag. No amount of "well, it wasn't that big a deal" is gonna put a damper on that.

Yeah, probably the first time I ever agreed with the rnc. Even they knew that trump was grossly unqualified for the highest office. It wasn't the dnc lack of neutrality that hurt the democrats in this election.

Let me guess it's half the country that's racist bigoted homophobic and xenophobic that hurt the democrats

"Unqualified" = Barrack Obama.

The man couldn't have a led a high school charitable bake sale. The only reason he won two elections was due to the color of his skin. The minority community proved it this election.

My wife who typically stays out of politics even said Obama might be a nice guy but he was useless as a President. Just not a leader.

One thing tweeting does is by pass the snowflake media. It helped get him elected.

Just heard one of the all star media panels discuss why the civil settlement of the Trump University case should be investigated by congress, since the Clinton Foundation is being investigated.

Really? The media already knows the answer... Why even devote air time to it?

To me the other big loser in this election is the media.. Why ever believe a single word of their jabber again. it is sickening.
