Peneva & the Draft....

In talking with his mom this morning his plans remain the same as they have been since he opted out. To stay in Santa Barbara this year, workout with a trainer to gain strength. He had great feedback from a few NBA teams.
He is mulling over the chance to play with one of 2 NBA teams this summer in the NBA Summer League
He knows that he must get stronger to get more serious looks for the 2019-20 NBA season

For the life of me I can't understand how that is a better option than playing for the Herd one more season. Stay and be coached by a former NBA assistant coach and add muscle or go sit out a year. Wish him well but he is headed to Europe.

I agree, I don't understand this decision based on the thought process above. This makes zero sense because the kid is now paying for a place to live, eat, workout, and Im sure there is a cost for a trainer. Wow!

Kind of makes me think this is all a positive spin/ saving face. A couple of weeks ago Doc basically implied Chase got bad advice and declared for the draft. I suspect the same happened with Penava. And that's too bad.

Is it loyalty or just not being smart. Get your degree finished, add weight, and work under a former NBA coach at Marshall for a year. Shaking my head!!!

According to some - he does have his degree. But still wonder about the decision. Oh well. We have some new horses. Hopefully they will step up.

I think the reason this is such a sensitive subject for folks is because of what it seems to say about Marshall basketball's relative importance in the world: on the heels of the program's zenith, one of its best players opts to just go practice in a gym as opposed to playing his senior year.

But it really shouldn't. There are players who go to school at high majors, where they have access to the best facilities, the best swag, the hottest girls, the richest donors, play in the best conferences against the best competition, and they will bail with eligibility remaining to follow this same path.

NCAA basketball isn't the end-all be-all for the players that it is for the fans.

Very small chance he is paying for these items. His agent will cover all of those costs as an up-front "business" expense that will be recouped once he signs his first contract. His agent and firm are big time players in both the NBA and Europe. He will end up fine in the end. Some kids are just ready to "be pros" and this looks like it for Peneva.

His mother agrees with your assessment. His family couldn't be happier. They love the time he spent here and will forever be indebted but they all felt this was the best decision for their son. It was a must for them that Ajdin got a degree and he will have it. The mom is a doctor and sister is in dental school.

Really? I'm sure it has happened now and then, but, in any sport, you leave college, and you market yourself, in the case of basketball, to the NBA and then down the chain of the G-league, China, the Euroleague, the three lesser European feeder leagues, and wherever else, and either you go do that, or you get on with your life.

I would be interested in the names of, say, 10 players in the last 10 years who followed a path of quitting school, then working out on his own and then played serious professional ball in a later year. Doubt it.

Peneva can always ditch the one year of working out and go to Europe. The major leagues just ended their seasons and now is the free agent frenzy. You can best bet his agent is fielding calls on him many times each day. Depending on his desire and the $, he can always go to Europe for 1 season and then try to make the NBA next year if thats possible.

Lots of young people make poor decisions based on poor advice. For that matter many older adults do as well. I wish Ajdin Peneva all the best as he moves forward.

Lot of differences between Whiteside's situation and Penava's, Penava apparently has his degree or on the verge of getting it. Allegedly, Whiteside had stopped going to class the last semester he played for the Herd. May have had difficulty in maintaining eligibility at MU. Then there are the coaching situations: Donnie "we call him DJ" Jones was already slinking out the back door to UCF/FUC when Whiteside played his last game for MU. Meanwhile, Danny D. is riding a high wave of success and popularity in Herdtown and apparently has no problem with MU players trying to make a career in pro ball.

AllEers6 I was referring to previous posts in the thread questioning his decision. I agree with your observation that it was “odd” to do this considering where he may have been in next years draft had he stayed.

I understand, I hope he makes its but consider he played very little as a freshman, started as Soph and it ok and then had one great season. One more good year could not have hurt.

Per his mother is was all about building up his body. Going to class and traveling with a college team wouldn't allow him to concentrate on nutrition and build his body as much as living and working in a training facility.

Totally disagree that he couldn't get that at Marshall. Especially with our new facilities and MU sports med team. Football players add bulk and strength every year while here and many athletes do as well. Wish him well though.

That’s a load of bullshit because college athletes do it every year.

She's the doctor, not me. All I know is he gained less than 25 pounds in 3 years in Huntington.
Regardless what we think, he and his parents felt that it was the best option. It was clear that he HAD to get a degree first and he will by summers end.

That’s fine it was a family decision but to say he couldn’t get bigger focus on nutrition etc doesn’t make sense when other athletes all over the country can do it

I just don't think he worked on that stuff to be honest. You give him a summer with Coach Day and he probably would put on about 30 lbs overall and about 20 lbs of muscle. I'm not sure which S&C coaches are in charge of the BB team but they need to focus more on overall strength and bulking up everyone but Bennett. I know D'Antoni works them hard, which makes it difficult to keep their weight up, but it could be done with the right S&C plan. I believe this aspect is something that is lacking in the BB program.

But that's not what Herdmeister said. He didn't say that Penava couldn't get bigger while at Marshall. He said that if having to go to class, do work, etc., Penava couldn't work on his body and nutrition AS MUCH as if he had that as his only focus. And that makes complete sense.

How are you still in this thread?

Which does make since as, per comment above, Penava DOES have a MU degree. Thus, one more year at MU would require that he also be a student in the academic since. I assume that means graduate work, in addition to any strength and conditioning, and or weight gaining activities he may be pursuing.

Does anyone know: will the NCAA permit a student athlete who has an undergraduate degree and who has remaining eligibility, play the same sport while working on a SECOND bachelor's degree? Or does the student athlete, say Ajdin Penava, for instance, have to enrolled in Graduate course work in order to participate in the sport in which he still has eligibility???

.......I am guessing: (I know Yags ..... not the previous poster’s ? !!!)
It would have to be post-grad work. Based on the example of Alex Thomson. He just completed his 4 year degree. Has (2?) years of eligibility left. Will be taking Grad classes.

Duval Kirkaldy is our basketball strength coach. He came here a year ago from UCLA and has done a great job, per Danny. The guys love him and believe me it goes both ways.
