As you look at the numbers, here's a chart for reference to see how each grade would be categorized:

1-49 - poor
50-55 - below average
56-64 - average
65-70 - above average
71-79 - good
80-89 - very good
90-99 - outstanding

After averaging 38.7 points per game through the first five games, it took overtime for Marshall’s offense to score 20 in week six. Yes, a win is a win. Yes, it feels good heading into a short week with some newfound confidence. Yes, the Herd’s offense still has a lot to prove. Can the overtime win over Old Dominion propel Marshall to future success? Friday at North Texas will begin to tell that story. For the first time this season, a tight end received the highest offensive grade for the Herd according to PFF, as Devin Miller graded at 85.3. Now for a closer look at how the Herd performed on offense.

Quarterback:

Having graded at 69.4 against Middle Tennessee State, Grant Wells bounced back against Old Dominion grading 79.0. One could argue that the final possession in regulation and his overtime performance helped boost Wells’ grade as he ended the day 30 of 46 for 299 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Wells’ “Turnover Worthy Play” score has been noted in previous reports and it saw a significant decrease last week, dropping from an 8.8% against Appalachian State to a 1.9% against MTSU. Wells showed slight improvement in that category against ODU, as he scored a 1.8%. His NFL Passer Rating for Week 6 was 79.9.

Running Back:

Despite only having four carries for 12 yards and two catches for six yards, Sheldon Evans was Marshall’s top graded running back with a 70.1. Rasheen Ali was not too far behind, grading at 68.1. While neither of these grades are stellar, perhaps the biggest takeaway from Saturday’s victory was ball security with this unit.

Wide Receiver:

After having the second highest grade among the Herd’s wide receivers against MTSU, Shadeed Ahmed led Marshall against ODU grading 70.0. Willie Johnson had the second highest grade at 62.3, followed closely by Corey Gammage with a grade of 62.1. Jayden Harrison graded 60.1 while Stone Scarcelle finished with a grade of 47.6, a week after attaining the top receiving grade.

Tight End:

For the second week in a row, Devin Miller was Marshall’s top graded tight end at 85.3. After what many had hoped would be a breakout performance against Appalachian State, Xavier Gaines followed his grade of 49.2 against MTSU with a grade of 50.8 in the win over ODU. There is a lot to digest with these grades. Should Miller be receiving more targets? Is it route running or lack of effort from Gaines? It will be interesting to see how these two perform against North Texas and beyond.

Offensive Line:

Marshall’s offensive line saw quite a bit more rotation between lineman against ODU than it had in the previous two contests. Will Ulmer received the highest grade among the offensive lineman with a 72.4 (70.1 run block, 71.9 pass block) on 84 snaps. James Magee was next in line at 68.6 (71.5 run block, 63.4 pass block) playing 49 snaps. Alex Mollette had the third highest grade, 67.3 (59.1 run block, 86.6 pass block) on 84 snaps, followed by Alex Salguero at 61.2 (60.5 run block, 59.3 pass block) on 59 snaps, and Kendrick Sartor with a 55.5 (68.1 run block, 45.5 pass block) on 51 snaps. Of note, Logan Osburn graded at 50.4 on 52 snaps, while Ethan Driskell received a grade of 42.8 playing 33 snaps.
