Since in town, decided to catch the basketball scrimmage at Gullickson.
The basketball practice arena looks really nice with all the renovations done to it!
Appeared to be a rep from the Spurs watching today.
The starters for the Green were Curfman (pg), Voyles (sg), Conner (sf), Obinna (pf), Mckey (center). The bench were Fricks, Nutter, and Goran. Nate Martin was on the green side, but did not practice and was in street clothes and a walking boot.
The starters for black team were Braun (pg), Crawford (sg), Thieneman (third guard), Marko at the four, and Toussaint at center. Moe and Pruett were the bench for the black team.
This was a basic scrimmage with officials. We didn't do any press plays or run any type of zones, was man to man the whole time.
The green team won 98-81 I believe, but the black team was leading at the half by 5-6.
Curfman led all scorers with about 36 or so, with about 9 threes. He's lost about 15 lbs (looks more like he did at VMI) and was at the point most of the game.
Would have liked to see what he could have done seeing a zone or press being at pg or having a more athletic guard against him on both ends. Especially on the defensive end to see if the weight loss will transfer to being quicker and movement in the feet. He did more pick and roll at the three line, than drive or driving and kick in this scrimmage.
Obinna didn't have that good of a scrimmage and seemed to have some type of back problem, he didn't play the second half either. He looked about the same body wise.
Voyles struggled in the first half on offense, but probably finished with 20 some. The second half did a better job of driving to the basket to get a shot and made about 3 threes the second half.
Didn't really notice much from Mckey or Goran. Seemed like they had some put backs. Figure we will use them more with teams that are bigger down low (ala Louisiana last year).
Fricks was the first one off the bench and he looks and played about the same as last year.
Conner looks like he's put on about 10 lbs in the chest, but still rather lean in the arms and legs. He pushed the ball in transition a bit, but for the most part he was quiet today.
Nutter, was really surprised by him. He appears to be a player Marshall fans will like, but opposing teams will hate. He's a scrapper, hustles on both ends and doesn't quit (something we desperately needed at guard last year). He was also getting into the ear of some of the players on the black team as well pissing at least one off, and loving every minute. He's a spark plug. He was also the backup PG to Kam.
Cam Crawford, he was either first or second on the black team in scoring with 20 some. He was more athletic than I anticipated, but lean in the body. He seems to play more ISO ball when he gets it, but that might have been because who was on his team. Seems he brings energy, but might compare him to Beyers with impact plays...
Marko was either first or second in scoring for the black team. His play was about what is typically expected.
Braun, hmmm....he had his wrist tapped up pretty good.
Toussaint, for the first 5-6 minutes he was getting put backs, getting rebounds on both ends, baby hook. But for the rest of the scrimmage he seemed to disappear.
Moe, you can tell he's been in a weight room especially compared to the rest of the team. He had a couple of put back baskets down low and rebounds. He seemed to get lost during transition plays on both ends, and when he got the ball on offense it seemed to end up as a jump ball at least a couple of times. Mckey also had an impressive block on him when he tried to post and do a baby hook. He was getting a lot of coaching from Ryan Taylor.
Pruett, he's a walk-on and looks the part. He was noticeably lean compared to the rest of the team.
Corny and Adam were the coaches for the green team, while Cline and Justin were the coaches for the black team. Dan by himself on the other side just watching and letting the coaches do their thing.
Appears about 10-15 fans were at the scrimmage. Will say, it is much appreciated to be able to go to practices and see how the team is doing and progressing along.
