Second Rate

We always take tons of fans to Athens, its close for most of us to drive up and back easily. I didn't say I was treated badly. And Athens is a nice area. But you have to admit, OU puts more into this game than Marshall. At this point, I would say Marshall has surpassed Miami as your biggest rival. At least on the surface that seems to be the case.

I will have to disagree with the Miami rivalry statement. The rivalry between OU and Miami is institution deep. The rivalry between OU and MU only pertains to the football field. We want Miami to fail in everything they do. You will see many OU fans cheer for The Herd when they are playing other teams. You will NEVER see an OU fan root for anything from Miami.

You're absolutely right. It is apparent that Ohio does put more into this game. That is why we keep winning. Marshall keeps showing up against the Bobcats expecting an easy win and we won't give it to them. Maybe if Marshall put a little more into this game, they wouldn't be 2-4 in the series. Marshall can make all of the excuses as to why they keep losing they want. Until they take this game seriously, they will continue to be humiliated. They then demean the Bobcats by calling them a "second rate" team and then continue to keep losing to them. A real "second rate" team is one that expects success to be handed to them because of some romanticized "legacy" and then makes excuses and insults when it isn't.

Marshall is just a rivalry. Miami is a deep-seated hatred. No one outside of those two schools will ever understand that.

Marshall fans hate lil Miami more than you realize. Different reason than OU but it's a hatred we give to no other program.

My argument to that would be, did Miami keep their starters on the field the entire game? Because if Miami put in their 3rd string against the Young Thundering Herd, what else were they supposed to do in that game? That being said, I would assume that they did the most horrible thing possible. That is all I expect from Miami.

That is a legitimate question. My friends and I (MU fans and not) have always wondered that. If anyone has an answer that is backed up by proof, I'd love to see it.

i do have a band question.. This was my first trip to Athens what does the 110 signify? Also why were dressed band members standing on the sideline during pregame and half time? thanks

Sure! Originally, in 1967 when the band in its current form was founded, there 110 members and they were all male. The new director cut all females from the band and they were called the "110 Marching Men of Ohio." In the 1970's women were readmitted back into the band and the number quickly grew to more than 110. Now, "110" refers to the percentage each individual is expected to give while in the band.

The people in uniform on the sideline are known as "alternates." They are students that didn't make the band, but were still good enough not to be cut altogether. These students are fill-ins for any member that may get hurt or have a family emergency. The audition process for the Marching 110 is very competitive and usually students are only alternates for a year before they make the band the next season. Each year there are over 100 freshman that show up to audition for the Marching 110 and only 30 or so make it. They will take some of the ones that were close in as alternates and turn the rest away completely.

I was told some members are picked for pregame or halftime but not necessarily both. Not sure if that's accurate.

Yes. The pregame block is more selective. I marched in the 110 from 2002 - 2005. I was in the drumline. I didn't make pregame my freshman year, but I made halftime. I was on the sidelines for pregame my first year. If you are selected for pregame, you are automatically in the halftime block, too.

Speaking of bands, I was really impressed with the Marching Thunder on Saturday. They have really improved and the new uniforms look good, too! They put on a good show! I still have friends in the Marching Thunder that were in some of my education classes while I attended Marshall. They're a great group of kids.

Uh, since our move back to 1A, we are 12-6 against OU. Solich has done a great job with that program. Now OU's next goal is to win a league title, something it hasn't done since the late 60's I think?

They may be 12-6 against OU since your move back to 1A, however, we have to look at the entire record. I know Marshall fans say that "no one cares about going that far back." That isn't true. No MARSHALL FAN cares about going that far back. You can't just start counting when the record is in your favor and is convenient. That would be like saying that OU is 4-2 against Marshall since 2010 and treating that like the OFFICIAL record. That doesn't give the entire picture, now does it? Ohio leads 33–20–6 and 4-2 in the most recent series. And that's the official record. Ohio U leads it.

I was also impressed with Marshall's band. One of my daughters best friends plays the flute for the Marching Thunder.

I probably know her if she went to Gallia Academy (I'm assuming that from your name "Gallia Cat."
She went to Ohio Valley Christian and is a music major at Marshall. She has never been in a marching band until now. I guess it's required for her major.

WOW, you are the superior program. Enjoy that. Hope you're happy.

You gonna trash us like you did on the Bobcat board?
Trashed how? Calling you guys 2nd rate, saying Huntington was a dump in the middle of no where, can't believe we play "the likes" of Marshall, and your facilities are high schoolish? I don't think I have made those type of statements

I predicted how Marshall would react and probably joined in the gloating on the Ohio victory. If I got personal I apologize. I will review my post.

Lol. Enjoy 8th Avenue and the Meth dealers. I lived in Huntington for a year. My house was broken into and my car was keyed. I moved right back across the river. And ATHENS is the dump??? Look at crime data. Huntington has 300% higher crime rate than Athens. That is figured with the population taken into consideration. Huntington is roughly twice the size of Athens, but has roughly 30 times the crime.

I'll take my "dump town in the middle of no where" over a dump city in the middle of the Detroit drug ring any day of the week.

Just stating the numbers. Facts are a stubborn thing. I am very happy that we keep beating a team that believes that they are so superior but just can't seem to win. And then, after their LOSS, continue to call OU a second rate team. Only a Herd fan would have that logic. If OU is second rate, then why can't the almighty Herd beat them? Come on...that doesn't make any sense and you know it.

Oh Jesus. There will be a party on Court Street tonight. Why not...it's Monday.

MY STATE: MY TEAM. GO BOBCATS!

BC110 I'm sure you can tell the disappointment in the posts in response to you. We Herd fans have now suffered three defeats in Peden since Doc took over. Give OU credit. I sat there Saturday evening watching us play rather poorly. Dont misunderstand me. I, personally, was not that impressed with Ohio overall BUT was very impressed with your QB and FB. Nice job by both and we could do nothing to stop them. Hopefully, in four years, when we return to Peden in 2019 we can return the favor! Peace.

I'll be there. Watching in almost a sickening level of anxiety. I know how well Marshall can play. They're scary. It is a good and friendly rivalry between two great regional schools. I hope Marshall wins every game they have left. I truly do. GO HERD!

Luv OU's Band! They entertain while our band performs. BTW, Marshall is second best corps style band in the Tri-State. Boring. Cabell Midland is the best band. In the entertainment "Show Style" category: 1) OU. 2) WVU 3) Parkersburg HS

In watching the OU band I always feel that they are Florida A&M or Southern U wanna be's. The traditional black schools have bands that do what OU does except MUCH better. They dance and jive incredibly well. OU is not nearly as good at that. What go me was, the biggest cheers were for OU dancing with the instruments on the ground. Why not just leave the horns at home and just be a dance team?

Google Top 10 Marching Band rankings. OU is on almost all the Top 10's along with Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Tennessee, Georgia, Jackson State, Penn State, Purdue, etc. They rank #1 in a couple so they must be doing something right.

First of all, I didn't say your program was second rate, that was another poster. Second, I have always cheered for OU when they don't play Marshall. Thirdly, Huntington has its problems but Athens isn't immune from issues - all cities have them; to deny that is not being truthful.
Lastly, You won the battle for sure but when you win a few league titles, finish in the top 25, have Heisman finalists and a 9-2 bowl record, then you can truly say you are the superior program. One game does not a season make. Regards.

Good for you, you win band competitions and we will win conference championships, bowl games and stock NFL rosters with players. Your Super Bowl and we are guilty of being asleep at the wheel. Shame on us for that.

We're not denying that every town has their problems. We are just saying that Huntington has more than Athens. That was the statement. Don't broaden your statement to cover up your initial claim.
