Second Rate

In watching the OU band I always feel that they are Florida A&M or Southern U wanna be's. The traditional black schools have bands that do what OU does except MUCH better. They dance and jive incredibly well. OU is not nearly as good at that. What go me was, the biggest cheers were for OU dancing with the instruments on the ground. Why not just leave the horns at home and just be a dance team?

It's kind of the opposite. The band director at Florida A&M right now is the old director of the Marching 110. Dr. Sylvester Young.

Good for you, you win band competitions and we will win conference championships, bowl games and stock NFL rosters with players. Your Super Bowl and we are guilty of being asleep at the wheel. Shame on us for that.

Nothing like bringing a bunch of your fans to pack a stadium and then claiming that it is a Super Bowl for the other team. That makes sense...

We took over 10,000 to Clemson and more than that to UNC. We took over 3,000 last year to ODU. So if we travel hours to a game and take thousands, we certainly take that many only 90 miles away. Remember, we don't play in a bus league anymore. We actually have to fly to football games like MAJOR football programs do.

We're not denying that every town has their problems. We are just saying that Huntington has more than Athens. That was the statement. Don't broaden your statement to cover up your initial claim.
Funny how when you have more people you have more problems.

Apparently you should recruit players that can stay motivated. Perhaps Marshall should look at more than just a recruits athletic ability and realize there is a mental aspect to the game. It is a big game and it's not OUr problem that your team can't get up for a game against a team that had beaten them in the previous 3 of 4.

Ohio wins plenty of conference championships sparky. Check the banners at the Convo when you come to Athens in December. Then when we win the conference championships we actually go to the NCAA's and advance. Preseason NIT Champions, Seeet 16's and Elite 8 as a manner fact. I have always considered Ohio to be a basketball school that plays pretty good football.

We are talking football here. When was the last MAC football championship? Won't be this year either with BG in your division. I think we have won a few Southern, MAC and C-USA championships since your last one....

I'm sorry but you said Championships and not specific to football. Ohio definatly has a championship drought in football and we are objective enough to own it. But don't act like OUr athletics program is some downtrodden program that never taste success because you would be very wrong! Ohio University fans are passionate about more than one sport.

That is true. However, you're not taking into consideration the math behind your statement.

You would think that Huntington being twice the size of Athens, there would only be roughly about twice the amount of crime (proportional). That isn't true. Per 100,000 people, Huntington averages 349 violent crimes per year (16 times higher than Athens - a town only half the size of Huntington). Athens only averages 22 per 100,000. There were 3,923 property crimes in Huntington, Athens had 595. Which means that even though Huntington is twice the size of Athens, it has 6.5 times the crime. Huntington has a Crime Index of 1. Which means it is only safer than 1% of other US Cities. Athens has a crime index of 30. Chances of being a victim in Athens: 1 in 1096. Which means that if the crime in Huntington was only more common due to having twice the population, the chances of being a victim should reflect that by being half that of Athens, 1 in 548. It's not. Chances of being a victim in Huntington: 1 in 141. Huntington is consistently higher than the national median in crime (3.8 per 1,000 residents). Huntington is more than twice that at 7.10. Athens comes in at a low 0.91.

Sorry to bore everyone with math, but I just had to set that straight.

Let's see. Southern, 1A ball, way to go! MAC champs, i'll give you that one. C-USA champs, all of the good teams that were in CUSA when Marshall moved there are gone. You are technically Sun-Belt champs these days...

Except you're not a MAJOR football program. You're in C-USA. Any conference ranking you find always has C-USA almost last, usually lower than the MAC. Marshall also has had a #128 of 128 strength of schedule ranking for what? Two years now?

You won't get into a P5 conference because you don't play anybody. You beat Purdue...but so did almost everyone during the past 2 or 3 years. You definitely won't get into a P5 conference when consistently losing to a MAC school.

BIG FISH in a little pond.

There should be an * by the MAC Championships since the program was committing major violations at the time and suffered the consequences once it left the conference.

Time to move on the game is over. I hope you guys win out because it will make Ohio look better. We can chat again during basketball. Go Cats!

Marshall is a football school (and ONLY football). Look at all of Marshall's most notable alumni (Other than me. Yes. Surprise. I'm a Son of Marshall as well as a Bobcat). They are almost ALL athletes. Ohio has a more diverse alumni base. Senators, Representatives, Architects, philanthropists, foreign ministers, musicians (both pop and classical), and actors/actresses.
Ohio is a more well-rounded, eclectic university and I can say this because I have degrees from BOTH schools.

Almost all Alumni? LOL!
The President of Intuit
The owner of the Greenbrier
Joe Johns - NBC
Sean Callebs - CNN
Chris Kline - Multi Milllionaire businessman
VP of Novation
Robert C Byrd
Earl Ray Tomblin , current WV Governor
and dozens of other business persons, professionals, music, actors and actresses.

Obviously you don't pay attention to minor sports like softball, volleyball, women's tennis, etc.

Good Lord, don't be so arrogant. Now, move along junior.

Ask anyone without ties to Marshall to name notable Marshall alumni and they will usually say Randy Moss or Chad Pennington or some other athlete. Not many people will say, "oh yeah! Marshall University. Joe Johns went there!" Look at any list of notable MU alumni by category and the "athlete-category" will be the longest...by a lot. Nothing wrong with that, but it is absolutely true. Marshall puts out good athletes.

I'm not being arrogant with my post. Like I said, I went to Marshall. When I would travel and someone would ask me where I went to college, I had to reference Randy Moss or the "We are Marshall" movie. Athens and OU is a more diverse campus and has a larger selection of areas of study. They offer Ph.D programs in over 90 fields, Marshall has under 10. Look at the demographics. Look at the International communities represented on the Athens campus and the cultural events that literally will represent over 100 countries. So, I'm just stating facts...junior.

See, I'm not bashing Marshall as a university. I received a top notch education at Marshall. Marshall is a great school. I'm just saying that OU is a bigger school with more to offer and also has more culture, which is part of receiving balanced education. Hence I called it more "eclectic."

As for not paying attention to minor sports? That is a moot point. Does Marshall not rely mostly on their football program to keep their athletic department afloat?

With the exception of people who attended a given university, that is (almost) always the case. There are just a lot more famous athletes than famous bankers/business owners/etc. Also the sports industry is unique in that athletes' colleges are frequently mentioned when discussing them.

Band director in 1967 must have decided that college girls should not blow men's instruments in public.
Now that's just wrong.
