Was there even any interest by Doc and Hamrick to get us a 12th game on our open date? Guess not.

we could play ECU or UCF on that date.... doubt it happens now

Not sure I understand why we would not want to play. We have already had our “open” date. Guess Doc/Hamrick like 11 games

Guess Doc plans on using that open date, Oct.27th, and the week to prepare for our Nov. 4th game at Southern Miss., almost never an easy game for the Herd, especially at "The Rock".

I could see us picking up a game against a FCS team but not a road game against a team that might beat us... Oct. 27 is right in the middle of out toughest CUSA stretch. An extra bye isnt the worst thing in the world.

That said, id play an easy home game to make some extra money (just like Nebraska is doing).

Unless there isn't a FCS school available for that date. The majority of those schools are in the middle of their conference schedule too and don't have bye weeks.

Also, I don't want to watch Marshall play a FCS school in front of a half-empty stadium. Since it took several discount ticket offers to get more fans to come watch NC State, the athletic department would probably have to offer $1 tickets to get people out to watch Marshall play Savannah State or North Alabama or DeVry.

Any extra money from the home game would be deducted from the insurance money from the canceled SC game.
Correct. There is no reason to play it. You don't get a single penny more in income, you risk player injury and you give up an bye week in the middle of your conference schedule between 2 of the toughest conference games on your schedule. FAU and USM

We have nothing to gain by playing that day. Want the off day in the middle of the conference schedule.

This mentality is pathetic. I guess that’s little ol Marshall for you though. It’s the difference in programs like us and Boise. Some are ready to take on anyone at any time. Some prefer an off week in a conference we never win anyway.

So if we pick up a game against an FCS program (which we already played one this season so I don't think having 2 on your schedule is a positive) and lets say Tyre Brady breaks his leg. You still gonna say we should play?

We will still have half of our conference schedule left to play. There is no reason to schedule a new game because we really do not gain anything from scheduling it.

I believe in playing anyone anywhere anytime. But sometimes you have to be realistic to the situation. You want to be like Boise, then believe you can win your conference. I bet their fans do. You speak out of both sides of your mouth. Which is more pathetic?

redsfan5590 uh ticket/game revenue and makes the schedule complete as being the 12th game is what we gain.

You gain a 12th game but you do NOT gain any ticket revenue.

Any money you gain is deducted from the SC insurance payout of $1.3 million.

You would play the game for concession/parking money plus anything over $1.3 million at the gate.

The 12th game would be a makeup game for the SC game.

From what I understand the insurance company requires any income from a makeup game be deducted from the insurance payout for the SC game. Guess that's the way the policy was written.

When has Marshall ever realized a gate of over $1.3 million at home?

Probably last time it was close to that figure was the last sellout of the Joan, Louisville 2016, maybe Purdue 2015 as well

The thought though is get roughly $1.3mil with no effort on any level vs effort/possible injury for the same bottom line $. Sit on ass=$1.3mil. Do it all day/everyday.....

Thank goodness the SC game was canceiied .The NCSt game makes me think we would have lost in a route. The extra time off will give us an advantage of resting our players and not getting players hurt .

Leaving money aside, who wouldn’t want a twelfth game? Football season is short, and I bet the team would like to go take a shot against a good quality team. The competitive fire has to burn in these young men if they’re to be successful. I like the “anyplace, any time” mantra.

I know our staff was very pleased when the schedule was announced to see a bye week after FAU and before traveling to USM. Smack dab in the middle of CUSA play. I feel sure they are happy to see it kept that way.

I figure if we would have won against NC State, we would have been looking for a replacement game! The best replacement game would have been with UCF. Keeps the strength of schedule stronger. Win all our conference games including CUSA Championship. That would land us as the New Years Bowl Six team spot!!

A few things I don't think that our fan base understands:

  1. Playing a 12th game will give us absolutely no additional revenue.
  2. You have to have two sides willing to play. all of this talk about "UCF would be our most natural opponent"... ok well, UCF may not want to play us. This isn't a video game where you just make your schedule and that team has to play you. There has to be interest from them. And for a team with the longest winning streak in the country who is trying to get back to an access spot, why would they want to add a game with a former rival?
  3. we don't gain anything from playing the 12th grade.

I agree. I would like to add that there is no way UCF would play us unless the game is in Orlando. If both teams end up meeting their potential then the game could be for the access spot so why would they play us in Huntington with them already having the inside track to the bid due to national perception. If we beat them and win CUSA then the bid would likely be ours. Now that is a lot of ifs but that is the scenario from their end. From our end, why would we go play in Orlando during our bye week, which also happens to be between the FAU and S. Miss games, and then forfeit the $1.3M net estimated travel expenses in insurance money we get for the cancelled South Carolina game. Unless someone offers us $1.3M to play that week then there is no reason to schedule a game.
