I am going to guess those who watched were largely fans of Trump. And that is normal, Obama always scored high on these polls "among speech watchers" and a third of the nation hated his guts.

Not really. TV ratings for the SOTU have been slipping for a while now....there's a bump for their first address and then it usually goes down. The days of a 50 or even 40 rating for it are over. There's just too many other options.
Hell, I liked Obama and I think I watched two of his.
We might seem more polarized than ever, but I also think people are pretty disengaged overall. Sure, we call each other idiots on social media, but really we don't pay much attention.
I don't disagree with any of that but to say that only trump lovers watched is disingenuous in my opinion. That doesn't mean half the country watched just that people on both sides tuned in.
Political junkies are always going to watch. Except for me, I just got tired of watching through the filter of stupid canned applause by POTUS's party, and now prefer to read the transcript.
I'd say the 25% that didn't approve are the ones that hate him that did watch. "those who watched" just isn't representative of the actual electorate, that's all. So it's a pretty meaningless poll. People who watch already have their minds made up. Even when Obama's approval ratings were low his SOTU polled well.
I haven't done any research on the opposition reply, but that has to be the dumbest thing ever invented in politics.
I think one day we will look back and see Trump as the President that might have destroyed the importance of the televised speech, due to how he uses social media. Lower viewership + new technology, and POTUS is already overexposed by the traditional media as it is. Hell, speechwriters might become a thing of the past.

I am suggesting it is a meaningless poll about what is usually a meaningless speech. Same shit, different year.
Like voting for Hillary before they never voted for Hillary. Just a bunch of bruised egotistical self-righteous elitists still pissed of election outcome.
I had two girls i know who despise Trump messaging me throughout the speech. They were ready to dump shit all over it and seemed disappointed (not fans of his) they couldn't. The only thing to take away from these is an idea what the president wants to blow money on this year
