Landing gear failure or failure to deploy landing gear? I think there might have been overload on the part of the pilots and they overlooked deploying the landing gear. Manual landing gear release only takes about 10 seconds on a 737 if I recall.

Indeed. Landing gear can also be deployed manually if electronics don’t work. Granted you can be worried about an engine failure but dang landing gear is number two on the list. They also seemed to be carrying way too much fuel for it to burn that bad. Usually US planes only carry a certain amount plus some reserves to avoid landing heavy on fuel for this very reason.
