Watched the new trailer. Here is my theory:

I think episode 8 will be all about Luke having turned from the light side but not to the dark side per se and yet what he is trying to do is destroy the Force and the Jedi with it kind of like destroying the Ring in Lord of the Rings.

Kylo Ren and Rey will both play a part in either helping or stopping Luke in his quest.

The space battle that we saw in the trailer will just be kind of filler background stuff of a kind of three-way war between the First Order, the Resistance, and the Republic.

Nothing impressive or exciting about this trailer. I remember getting chills after the first time I saw The Force Awakens trailers.

the recent Marvel trailers (especially Guardians Vol 2 and Thor) were much better. but, it was just a "teaser".

Because the FA trailer was meant to get you hyped about the falcon being back, and Star Wars with CG done right.

This trailer is much more cerebral. Listen closely to all of the echoes/whispers....

Stringent devotion to the light side by the Jedi has led to the creation of two exceedingly evil and powerful baddies (Annikan and Ben.)

I think Luke sees this, and is going to be trying to get rid of "light" and "dark". He was prophesised to bring balance to the force after all. To eliminate the radicals on both sides would bring true balance.
