It's with great sadness that HerdNation announces the passing of Coach Phil Ratliff. Phil was a tremendous player and coach, but more importantly he was an even better person and friend.

A two-time all-American on the offensive line at Marshall and a member of the school’s athletic Hall of Fame, Ratliff was the Thundering Herd’s Tight Ends coach for six years (2006-11).

A native of Louisa, Ky., Ratliff received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a specialization in special education from Marshall in 1994. Phil is survived by his wife Jenni and two children: Haley and Dylan.

Herd Heaven gained another Son of Marshall today. May God bless his family and the entire Charlotte 49er Nation as they deal with the loss of their husband, father, and coach.

RIP Coach,

Entire Herd Nation

Great guy. So young. So tragic. In addition to being such a big Marshall loss, my girls went to Spring Valley. My heart goes out to his family and Charlotte kids.

Pray for Jenni, Haley and Dylan as they try to figure out why this happened and how to move on. Very sad.
