A big chunk of it is environmental. You can even see it in the localities of players for different sports. Want a great basketball player? Go to the Northeast. Want a great football player? Go to Florida or Texas. But, kids in New Jersey aren't genetically predisposed to being better basketball players, and kids in South Florida aren't genetically predisposed to being better football players.
Frankly, the black community spent over 100 years after their freedom being disrespected and excluded. Sports was the first major integration, and sports players are heroes. Young black children saw the exclusion in other areas, saw black athletes excel and began to see it as their opportunity. They also have the Herd Fever, us against the world attitude. Almost every inner city kid spends thousands of hours a year getting better physically for sports (the major ones). They train at a rate white kids would never train at.
That is because Middle income white kids don't have the same motivations. They also see black athletes as superior, and it has been beat into their consciousness so they pursue other opportunities. White middle income kids play soccer, swim, lacrosse, etc. So now we have these kids (the white ones) with less motivation already (because they see other opportunities for success in business or school) believing they can't succeed in basketball/football at the rate of black athletes and chase other sports for success.

It has everything to do with this discussion. I was not the first individual to bring up using sports as a motivation for getting out of their challenging (socioeconomic) upbringing in this discussion. Again. You offered up a great metaphor. You should be extremely proud of yourself.

The whites control the money and jobs because it has been passed down over generations. Hard to control something you never had control over. But there is a Blackout Black Friday and a #BanChristmas protest going around in the black community withholding our spending power from the white corporations. A lot of sad Christmas mornings this year.
standing up for a cause is awesome, but standing up for a cause while emotionally hurting your own children is just ignorant.
Do kids really need all those gifts to begin with? Too many parents are worried about emotional hurting their kids instead of being fiscally responsible.

Disagree Herdman...anyone in W.Va. that is in any way a college football fan surely must recognize the football is a sport dominated by black players, with just a sprinkling of white kids in there somewhere. If you can't root for the black kids on your football team, you better start rooting for your college's backgammon team. Me personally, I root for EVERY SINGLE player wearing the Kelly Green ...NOT just the ones that have Light Kelly Green skin

Best basketball story of all time comes from Alabama Coach Wendell Hudson when he recruited the First 5 black basketball players to the University. He was questioned as to how he was going to play the black players and at the same time keep the rich and influential alumni happy. He replied, "I'ii play 3 at home, 4 on the road, and 5 when I'm behind." If you can do it any better than this legendary coach, go do your good thing.

Great question. I might add, more importantly, the black employees too. When the brothers and sisters don't go shopping at Walmart this "Black Friday", how much revenue will be lost, which goes to paying the brothers and sisters who are working that day?
