The Top 10 Closed WV Basketball Schools

Joe Pendry was a senior when Elwood was a sophomore. There was about 3-4 years difference in their age. Larry Laxton and Tom Evans were good also.

Woodrow Wilson High School and Stratton High School were put together in the late 60’s. Both old schools became junior high schools (Park Jr. and Stratton Jr.). A new building was build at that time for the consolidated Woodrow Wilson High School. Park still exists as a middle school and Stratton is now a elementary school. Yes this consolidation ended segregation in Beckley. There were only two high schools in Beckley at the time of the consolidation.

zilla, I really dislike doing this over and over but your post again contains inaccurate details. Joe Pendry has to be in his early 70’s, not 60 as you stated.

My correction.
...Joseph (Joe) PENDRY: Born August 5, 1947, Welch, WV. played at Oceana HS for legendary, Joe Beckelheimer. Starred at WVU, coached at Carolina Panthers.

BEFORE...I close I am willing to bet you that Area Huntington high school AD's DO GIVE A SHIT about Marshall's ONE Friday night game!!!!

Yep, personal saw Pendry and Oceana play a football game against Gary in 1964 and I believe he was a senior then. After playing college football, I believe at WVU, he had a good career as a football assistant, including many years as a successful asst. coach in the NFL,

Baileysville ,in Wyoming County was also a powerhouse in basketball. We went to Mullens and beat them , my first cousin laid 39 on them. They were to return to Baileysville the following year but they had no desire to play the Roughriders at their place. Good move.

love this thread! Bill Craig, great hearing from you..nothing like Tuesday and Friday nights at Williamson Memorial Fieldhouse! Gotta give some love to our biggest nemesis though, those damn Logan Wildcats were pretty awesome! If anyone here ever played in, cheered for, or was a spectator at a Williamson Wolfpack vs Logan Wildcat basketball game you know what I'm talking about when I say you were witness to some of the greatest high school basketball anywhere!

I'm pretty sure Pendry's first time as a Off-Co. in the NFL was with the Chiefs in the late 1980's when Marty Schottenheimer was KC's HC. I think he coached with Marty earlier with the Browns and suffered due to the drive by Elway.

Pendry also coached at Alabama under Saban.

yeah with Saban coaching a little in the pros it seems he would hire coaches with NFL experience and the way Pendry called the 'O' game with the Chiefs he would fit Saban's style.
With the Chiefs Pendry 245# Barry Word would carry the ball along with 260# Christian Okoye and on third down he would have Steve Deberg(sp?) throw a screen pass to Word or look for the TE. Okoye wasn't that great of a blocker or pass receiver but sometimes caught his ball but the 'd' hardly paid any attention to him.true Marty ball all the way. I think Paul Hackett replaced Pendry in 1993 to help with bringing in Montana as FA to Chiefs.

In the early 80's, the Field House was packed! One of the best photos of those times was, I believe, Alfred Hairston going in for a layup and you could see the packed Field House behind him. I remember Strut hitting the game winner for us in '86 against Wheeling Central, and the Baker Boys in 88-89 going back to back. By the mid 90's, when I was in school, we competed but didn't win any titles. Also, did you have a couple of kids who graduated in, say, '93 and '96? If so, I saw the oldest at CVS in Kenova a couple of months ago. XD

My dad was Buster White. Real name was Albert. But Buster was how everyone knew him.
Your father Buster started on our Williamson
1965 AAA 26-0 team. We were ranked #1 all year and lost by 2 points to Beckley in the finals. We beat Logan 3 times...twice on their court. Your dad had one of the prettiest jump shots I’ve ever seen.

Buster White, from Chattaroy, was one of the best players I ever saw. If I remember correctly he used to use his feet to deflect balls on the defensive side.

I remember James Hambrick from Williamson. The only player at the time to be named All State in two different classes.

James Hambrick, WHS, Class of 1967 & Member, WHS - HoF

Hambrick was a first team Class AAA All-State selection his senior season for the Wolfpack. Hambrick was a UPI Big All-State first team member, which included all classifications. He was also an All-State selection his junior season at Liberty High School. Hambrick is thought by many to be one of the top 10 players to ever wear the maroon and white.

Lol dad was proud of that. He didn’t give a damn about a kicked ball.
He held the single game scoring record for years at 44 for the Wolfpack until Mark Cline broke it. He was beyond proud to represent Williamson.
He always said he wished he had the three point line. He passed away last October.
As a kid when Williamson made the tournament. Dad would always take me.

Sorry to hear Buster passed away. He was a couple years older than me. He was from Howard Holler (hollow) and I was from Litton Holler. Went to school with his brother Robert.
