No way anyone should be named the secretary of defense in today’s world without a military or international intelligence background. This is laughable from Mattis to Joe Schmoe.
William Cohen, Bill Clinton's SecDef had no military experience.

William Cohen was SecDef when I began my military service. Met him in real life and he was a cool dude.

I don't think so, just based on the number of people with military service. There will be political leaders that served in the War on Terror, for sure.
Military experience is not a prerequisite for SecDef, and never has been. Quite a few had no military service, including Dick Cheney. It is an executive position, so the main requirement should be how to effectively run a very large corporation; an emphasis on understanding technology is extremely important in today's military. A Boeing executive with an M.S. from MIT that understands planes and missiles? Works for me.

In one of the few moments I'd ever take up from Drump, many of those who served as Secretary of Defense (including Dexter Manley) never served in the military.
