Underdogs?

You KNEW I would show up! Damn well I did! Dan is family!

He knows basketball well. He was ticked after the game. Dan & his coaching staff expected to win. He was mad the team did not defend down the stretch. I have been to his practices....he stresses defense a lot more than some of you "arm chair" coaches know. Just watch Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Michigan State and other talented programs. They are racing up the floor and firing up 3-pointers from all angles. That is today's basketball! The difference is those elite teams have the best players in the nation "reloading" into their systems with great offensive players and BIG BANGERS defending the basket. Those players come to college already having a good idea of playing sound defense. The GLORY in basketball is scoring points (duh)......not defending and wanting to play good defense is difficult..... because of the offensive talents of today's players. The importance of the 3-ball makes it more difficult to defend....Marshall stats were to the point the same as the Tribe. The difference was Bill & Mary converted SIX more 3-pointers [18 verses 12]. Playing defense comes from the heart...some guys have it...most do not!

Pullman, I bet you have played or continue to play pick up basketball? What is more fun....SCORING or playing defense?

Dan was ticked off
that his players did not defend after timeouts by having their hands at their sides & not having their hands in the shooter's faces. He and the coaches can only instruct.....it is up to the players to execute...."what they practice and have been taught" during the many hours prior to games.

Pullman, you need to purchase some tickets to Marshall basketball. I think you will be pleased what is being built by Dan & his staff.....and it will take more than 3-years to construct a winning program that has been in the dumpster for a long time.

Dan was ticked off after the game... cool story bro.

If you can't get players to make any effort on defense, do you think maybe that falls on the coach's shoulders? Just curious.

Also 'what is more fun, scoring or playing defense'? What kind of question is that. When you are a division 1 SCHOLARSHIP player, you do BOTH. It's not about which is fun, its part of the gig that comes with being recruited. Apparently that message is not given to the players.

Also I do go to some bball games, just haven't this year yet.

WOW... I didn't know that. They are REALLY impressive. I mean, I definitely want our aspirations to be that we beat a team that beat Old Dominion.

Anyone can have a non conference home winning streak. All they have to do is schedule Concord
It’s very hard for any program to very good in both major sports. Basketball is the easiest path for a mid major school to get national recognition. Is there a program that’s in the access bowl and big dance? If so...what kind of money are they spending?

Funny you ask that- Teams from the MAC, CUSA, AAC have all accomplished what we have in football AND made the dance several times.

Bridgewater (Division III), Presbyterian, Liberty, Milligan (NAIA), Savannah State, Washington Adventist (NAIA), Hampton, ODU, Mary Washington (Division III), High Point, Central Michigan, Howard, Bluefield (NAIA), Western Illinois, Wofford, Washington College (Division III), Liberty again, VMI, Goucher (Division III), ODU again. Really? When the best win in a three year streak of non-conference home wins is either ODU or Marshall, it is a non event.

But you do answer Pullman's question. The bus ride. This is the issue This is why no coach worth a d*** is going to come here, no matter how much we pay him. And why any coach who does anything will get out ASAP. You cannot recruit here. This league is spread out over THREE time zones. Any kid good enough to play in CUSA is good enough to play in the MAC, or the CAA, or what not. If he is smart, and actualy trying to get an education, why put yourself through 8 hour bus trips and 4 hour plane rides, when you can be in a league with a footprint of a couple of states? So we get the West Virginia HS all-stars and some no other choice eastern Europeans.

Which is a receipe for .500. Lather, rince, repeat.

Sam you are very much correct by pointing out the bus rides. Div 1 programs should not be riding buses for 5-6 hours. It’s a recruiting killer, one of my kids played D1 baseball at the highest level and they never took bus rides more than a couple of hours. And that sport is not a money maker except for a handful of schools.

Trying to understand your post....you are stating not going to the access bowl but winning six games or more in football, and getting a bid to the tournament? Such as MTSU.

No what I’m saying is many teams are as successful (or more) than us in football and have also made the NCAA tournament multiple times. MTSU is a good example. Memphis, SDSt, new New Mexico, heck i would argue many MAC schools. We have such a boner about a 10 year football span we had that we overlook the fact that we have NEVER been successful in basketball and haven’t been successful in football for 15 years. I’m tired of it

December 19th will be interesting.

77.....Not many teams win at Xavier [6-1 to date], therefore, I would think The HERD will lose that one. The good thing is Dan can't be faulted for not playing a Big name school. It will be a good experience for the young players. I doubt they will face a team with Xavier's talent during CUSA play. MU's goal is to be at or near the top of CUSA come tourney time in Frisco, Texas at Jerry's World.

Yes Pullman.
... it falls on the coaches shoulders when players do not execute [playing solid defense] as they have been coached in practice. Dan said that in his postgame...."that falls on me---we will work on that too." Dan is a player's coach...and he will not throw them under the bus...unless it warrants so. Bill & Mary's disappointing loss after battling from 7-points behind at the half---to go up by 7 with about 10 minutes remaining....ticked him off! Let's see if there is more defensive intensity Saturday against the Akron Zips.

Unfortunately,
HERD basketball does not get the same support from our AD as football does . I do not think The HERD football team traveled via Bus to Charlotte [5.5 hours] during the season. The basketball team most likely arrived back in Huntington from Williamsburgh around 4:00 am the following morning. Wonder how many of them made classes?

Jerry's World refers to AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Frisco, which is the Cowboys practice facility and headquarters, is about an hour from Jerry's World.

Stick to scamming people, beating women, and score keeping at JV high school baseball games. Sports talk isn't your thing.

Oh BRIGHT one [Ryan]......Jerry's World stretches farther than where the Cowboys play {AT & T Stadium}......

The term "Jerry's World" is a common nickname given to AT&T Stadium. By no means does it mean a piece of land that extends an hour by driving. Like usual, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Yeah but he puts things in bold and name drops that he’s related to DD (because apparently that’s a good thing). So we should listen to him
