The bonuses were announced days after Wal-Mart said it would cut 7,000 jobs.

The Walton family earned nearly $9 billion in Q4. I bet they are struggling with this loss of $157 million.
The lowest paid employees (cleaners, cashiers, etc.) at those stores (not all Walmart employees received the bonus) will keep about $60 after taxes. Thanks for the "bonus."
Jim Walton could give every single American Walmart employee (which this bonus didn't do) $10,000, and he'd still be worth over $14 billion. That's just Jim. It doesn't include the rest of the family.

Other than Target, there really isn't another company on a national scale. Walmart pays higher bonuses to its employees than Target. Why? Target pays their employees, especially salaried employees, higher wages.
In other words, Walmart takes advantage of the PR push this gives them while not really being more generous than their competitor.

Target is a different type store than WalMart. And, I bet at the end of the day the pay is not that much different.

Yes, that's the point. Walmart's closet competitor (Target) pays about the same after you include Walmart's bonuses (Target is still actually a bit higher after its lower-paying bonuses are included). In other words, Walmart uses this quarterly bonus as a PR stunt to look like such a generous company when in reality, its closest competitor pays about the same to its employees. It just doesn't use the PR stunt. But, hey, the PR stunt clearly worked on you.

Wal Mart gives people who are just faster than everyone else the freedom to do things at their own pace in the self checkouts. Target and their Nazi K-Mart like regime forces you into the habits of the slow and dumb. Standing and waiting for someone who just doesn't have the ability to think and move at my speed.

There are uppity walmarts too. They compete in the grocery business very well. There is a walmart near us that is clean, organized, etc. They compete with Harris Teeter nicely
Same here. When I lived in the uppity part of Louisville we had a Walmart Neighborhood Market, it was nothing like a regular Walmart. They even had hot young women as the cashiers.

Yes I am. I support raising the minimum wage, organized labor, single payer healthcare system, SS benefits, workers comp, unemployment benefits, etc. You are against all of those. My workers got paid vacations, flexible work hours, and a 4 day work week. Why is it that you never mention a significant pay increase when you mention changing the pay structure? For the little guy, for the big guy, it's all hot air. Every man is for himself, even the ones steeped in modern softness. The goal of that is to try to keep everybody from getting mad at him and to think of him as a "wonderful man." Still all about himself.
I signed a Teamster card. I am not against unions. People can chose to vote for a union or not. I don't really get in the argument either way. Unions have in many regards been their own worst enemy. I don't trust many companies either. Hell, I don't trust much of anybody.
I am for SS because I paid into that damn thing and so did many others and that is our damn money. The government has squandered that money which is our money.
Minimum wage is exactly that. A minimum wage. You can only paid unskilled labor for an unskilled job so much.
