MBB on Sunday

I always try and reserve any judgement until I see the product on display and in use. Yesterday afternoon there were times I could swear that DD was still coaching. Still shooting a lot of threes, losing their man on defense and falling for ball/shot fakes. Also. the low post looks suspect at times. I understand all the "they're just kids" stuff, but weren't these things going to be addressed under CJ?

Other than that, I thought they played hard and Nutter will need some knee and elbow pads, I think. However, UPike isn't the teams on the rest of the schedule. With that said, I'll be generous and say 10 to 12 wins this year and I wish them all the luck in the world.

P.S. Why didn't OAK play?

Venture Capital

Any of you deplorables who work in banking well versed in VC?

Background: Partner and I own the majority of a company. We have two other partners who, combined, own 15% currently. They are brothers and very successful in their other endeavors. A year ago, we brought them on board as investors/partners. We didn't need the money, but one of them owns five auto dealerships and the other is well connected, so we knew by allowing them to invest/become partners, we'd quickly grow our company based on the auto dealerships jumping on board.

In return for their investment (and more for their dealerships becoming big clients), we gave each of them 7.5%. However, if we were to ever hit $XM in revenue, they'd each get 30%, thus us losing our control. We regret that a bit, but we never thought we'd have as much success as fast as we did or think it would grow this much. Our market has grown to include big credit unions/banks/finance firms, and the growth possibility is now much bigger with those lenders jumping on board.

The brothers are pushing for us to do a series A with venture capitalists. Their concern is 1) a huge company will dump a hundred million into a company, copycat our program, and spread quickly across the country beating us to the market. 2) they want to grow as fast as possible and think our revenue can grow to $100M-$150M, at which point, they will want to sell. We'd want to sell far sooner than that. So they think getting a VC to jump on board for even a few million is worthwhile. I don't think it is needed, but I'm a lot more conservative business-wise than they are.

Their argument is that due to our operating agreement, VCs will be turned off due to the uncertainty of who has how many shares. I think we are three years away from hitting the threshold to where their equity jumps up to 30% each. Their offer is to cut their shares to 25% each (meaning they have 50% and we have 50%) if we agree to do a series A. By doing that, they argue that a VC wouldn't have to worry about any change in shares once we hit the revenue threshold. The operating agreement wouldn't be confusing to them, and they'd know exactly how much they'd get regardless of reaching a certain revenue.

I think they just want control (or at least take away our control) immediately instead of waiting a few years to see if we reach that threshold. Does their argument make sense? Would an operating agreement like that turn us off to VCs? A friend in Park City works for a VC, and she is meeting with me along with her CEO - all bright, Ivy grads whom I trust, but they are in real estate investing, so they may think a bit differently.

One more day of drinking

Well, until Friday gets here. Wing night here at Elliot's whitewater lounge. Wonder what famous locals will show up to sit with me tonight? Maybe that black dude that almost won one of those tv shows by singing. I'll look him up so I can know his name.

Meanwhile, I've decided to go get another case of the truth, and will go drink a couple pints over at Adventures since it's a friends birthday. Hope another friends 45 year old daughter shows up again. She had a huge rack and I felt my noodle move on Saturday night. She's better looking than anything rifle has ever had or dreamed of ever having. Right here in the hollers of WV.

Bowl projections Week 9...

It's too early to be worrying about this, but I always find it interesting to see where the "experts" think we might land during bowl season.

ESPN (Schlabach) -- Cure Bowl in Orlando, FL... Marshall vs. East Carolina
ESPN (Bonagura) -- 68 Ventures Bowl in Mobile, AL... Marshall vs. Northern Illinois
CBS Sports -- Cure Bowl in Orlando, FL... Marshall vs. East Carolina
24/7 Sports -- Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, TX... Marshall vs. East Carolina
College Football News -- Boca Raton Bowl in Boca Raton, FL... Marshall vs. Northern Illinois

Of those, the Cure Bowl has a good time slot - Friday afternoon the week before Christmas and an easy destination to get to in Orlando.

The Boca Raton Bowl has the worst time slot - Wednesday before Christmas at 5 p.m.

Quick choice

I discovered this morning that I was out of disposable coffee cups. I like the hard shell paper ones because of the texture and the way my hands can feel the warmth of the coffee.

When I went to the paper products section at Kroger’s, there was only one choice: eight cups in a sleeve, 16 oz., $7.99. The price had gone up almost $3 since my last visit. A little pricey in my opinion.

Next to the only paper cup choice was a number of styrofoam choices. I don’t like styrofoam because it takes forever to break down in landfills thus being bad for the planet. They had the 12 ounce size I wanted at $2.99 for two dozen. Screw the planet.

I Hate NYC

I've never loved it. Sure, like any major city, there are going to be really cool neighborhoods scattered around, but overall, I dislike NYC. I travel everywhere frequently . . . out of the 50 largest U.S. cities, Portland and Detroit are the only two I haven't spent time in (been in Detroit numerous times but not to visit). Out of the top 75 cities, that number jumps to seven. And of those 68 I have been to, I've been to most of them multiple times.

So even though I despise NYC overall, it is right at the top with Los Angeles for hot slvts. They're everywhere. Walk down a midtown street, your head is spinning . . . and the best part is the diversity of them. You'll see some hot models, then a girl who just got done running 10 miles, followed by a hot NYU nerd, followed by a sexy hood rat girl, followed by a hot [fill in any nationality] girl. They're simply everywhere. I don't like the city, but god, I can see why people who are single love it there.

On a different note, I am now upstate visiting momma'. She lives in a red area. We drove around the last two days, and I kept count of Harris vs. trump signs/flags. Yesterday, in her neighborhood which at this point has turned to lower-middle class over time, it was 11-11. Today, in the nicest neighborhood about a mile away, it was 3-0 in favor of Harris. In the next level down neighborhood, it was also 3-0 in favor of Harris. In next level down neighborhood, it was 3-2 in favor of trump.

It fits what I've said for years: the deplorables tend to be the lower educated and those down on their luck. trump gets their support, because he gives them an excuse to blame their laziness, poor decisions, etc. on everybody other than the person in the mirror. Considering the area that I was in, I was very surprised to see even the wealthiest areas be so lopsided.

USN WWII - Part 2

Friday was the 80th anniversary of the Battle off Samar which was immortalized in the book The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.

A bunch of 20 something kids on four destroyers and 3 destroyer escorts took on a much larger Japanese fleet in true David vs. Goliath fashion by taking their fast ships into harm's way. God bless their heroic efforts and sacrifice.

A fate worse than death

I was doing some boring household chores this morning, and as I usually do when I’m taking on monotonous work, I let my mind wander. I drifted back to the time shortly after I finished graduate work at Marshall.

I had moved to a new town and was getting ready to start my first real job. I hadn’t been in town but a few weeks when I met a very attractive young lady. Long curly hair, pretty face, smart, and from an influential family. Total package.

I ran into her several times before she surprisingly told me she would be interested in pursuing a relationship. I was very tempted, but for some reason, I sensed something wrong. I declined. Didn’t see her again.

I was continuing cleaning up the dusty house when my curiosity got the best of me. Had I made a terrible choice all those years ago? I got my phone and did a Google search. Didn’t take long to find her Facebook page.

I don’t have any social media, but Facebook let me view a limited amount of her information without being a member. She had moved to Louisiana and shockingly, her pictures showed that she had turned into a toad. How could anyone so attractive go downhill so badly?

It made me think how one small decision can change your whole life. I could easily be living in Louisiana with a toad. That would be horrible. I could never cheer for LSU.
