A few things we need to own...

Well its easy, now that we have a good football program and a soon to be good basketball program, you guys suddenly do not want to play us unless it is in Morgantown. What's the matter, you guys afraid of losing?

Just curious- am I missing something with the basketball program? I haven't seen anything to show we have done anything to be good. In fact we've been laughable the last two years.

Also- we've beat WVU in basketball multiple times, so I doubt they're scared of losing. They've LOST. That's not the issue

In fact we've been laughable the last two years.

Laughable?

We were 12-6 in conference play last year after a rough start against a tough OOC schedule. James Kelly was first team all-conference.

We lost Kelly but return four of five starters as well as our top two reserves this year.

Things are trending up for sure.

Umm, 65 points and 28 of those were on defensive and special teams TDs, and that likely won't ever happen again.

I agree with this, but my concern is our freshman corner #3 (among many in the secondary). I will not talk bad about any Marshall players (ones that get kicked off the team for stupid crap are fair game), but he got absolutely blistered. I went back and forth from being mad to feeling bad for the kid. Lamar Jackson has already proven he can run with the football. I don't want this to be the game where he proves he can do it with his arm too and throw the ball for 400 yards and 6 TD (before they pull him early third quarter).

He's already thrown for 400+ this year -

UL vs. Syracuse
20/39 411 yards 1 TD 1 INT
21 rushes 199 yards 4 TDs

Look at some of the losses. And how many times can we just not play defense in games against terrible teams. It's battle of street ball, record or not.

Hey Sam C.... eat a dyck

We play anything but street ball.

For the first time in over 20 years I'm looking at the basketball sked to find a good Saturday game worth making the drive all the way from Atlanta. Im that stoked about where Dantoni is taking this team.

Really fun exciting team basketball, and great to watch.

Having played for Allen Osborne when he was just a junior high coach I can say you knew team basketball or else, and watching what Dantoni is building is something special.....in a retro sort of way. Lost art is what it is...and any player coming from Poca is a fit, I hope we can bring them in.

As for Chase I think I was a bit terse, I hope he recovers and has a great game, but he's got to learn leadership. I wish Chad P would spend about an hour with him each week. Apologies to Chase, hang in.

I'll give the basketball team their due when we stop giving up 90 points to terrible teams. Coming down and chucking 3s and hoping the other team doesn't IS steetball and I saw that multiple times last year

That's a different argument altogether. Our style of play doesn't mean we're a laughing stock. We may give up a lot of points but we score a shitload as well. That's an attractive brand of ball to a lot of people.

That's the D'antoni style. Dan isn't above his head, he's coaching the game he wants to play. Now, he's getting the type of player that's natural to his philosophy. After his team got their feet underneath them the wins piled up. You'll be there right, in the student section?

Hey I'm all about it until you play that style and have a cold shooting night. Not playing defense will NEVER win a conference tournament. No team can stay hot enough to overcome other teams scoring at will every night, bad teams at that.

Ok laughing stock was harsh, but I'm sick of seeing there be zero defense.

Yeah a lot of people are attracted to that style- they're called guys who don't want to play defense. It means we can upset anyone on a hot night, and also lose to horrible teams. I mean my god man we gave up 85 points to GRAND CANYON. That is a laughing stock loss, period.

Grand Canyon actually has a really nice up & coming basketball rogram. They're coached by Dan Majerle, who did radio for the Suns when Mike & Dan were in Phoenix, and he plays a similar style to what Dan plays.

Your defensive comments aren't wrong, but there's more than one way to skin a cat. If you have a team who's strengths are on the offensive end, would it be best to slow the pace down and play at their pace where the score is in the 60s & 70s? Or would it be best speed teams up out of their comfort zone and make them play at our pace in the 90s? Listen to the opposing coaches in their press conference after playing us. They're so frustrated and thankful the game is over. Our defense isn't good, but some of the insane scores has a lot to do with pace of play too.

If you're justifying Grand Canyon as a program you've proven my point- LONG way to go....

Greenhouse, youre malfunctioning like the robot in short circuit. Clip those wires back together before your brain explodes...

I think a school that is in the same state as another school but refuses to play them home and home is a bunch of cross dressing catlins.

Thoughts Herd Catlin?

Thoughts on this one- why would we want to play WVU if they don't want to play us? I don't think ohio state plays OU home and home. I don't think Michigan plays eastern Michigan home and home. I don't think UNLV plays Grand Canyon home and home...I may be wrong though, I'll do some digging,

Your point about Grand Canyon is that they're a "laughing stock" loss.

They were 92nd in RPI last season, which is good for about the top 1/4 of college basketball. Sorry you dont recognize the name, but that doesn't mean they aren't a decent program for a small school.

Ok, you guys are right. Giving up 85 points to Grand Canyon and losing most of our non conference games because we refuse to play defense is a great building block.

I'll just drop the subject, obviously I'm in the minority opinion that our Bball program is not up to par. Quite frankly I'm sick of the constant 'next year' talk. We are always 'going in the right direction'. Just like we were with Herrion until he crawled on the floor like a dog after acting like he got elbowed and embarrassed our entire program.

I'm ready for next year to be this year, one time ever! A berth to the dance, SOMETHING!

Herd dat apparently has no appreciation for up tempo basketball like, uh, they play in the NBA at places like Golden State, etc. You know, where the scores are more likely to be in the triple digits than not. 140 to 137, 128 to 122, etc., etc. The kinds of high scoring, up and down basketball that keeps the stands full and the tv ratings up. Or else, you can prefer the hack a shack, foul/mug opposing players all 94 X 50 of the playing floor, in the name of "defense", and see a foul filled 62-59 "yawner" by Huggs' "muggers". Give me the up and down, wide open, push the ball and get off a good open shot type of game over one that resembles a rugby scrum EVERY TIME!!!!

The difference in your example and the Herd is WINNING. I have no problem with up tempo basketball. What I have a problem with is wins and losses. I have a problem with excuses every single year. I have a problem with it has always been 'next year' for the Bball program. At least in football we've had our sunshine...

Does Mississippi play Southern Miss home & home? What about Purdue & Ball State? Being in the same state does not equate to "you better play or you are scared" no matter how many times you say it. No one is saying Marshall can't beat WVU. If they played every year, eventually Marshall would win a game in football. Hell one of Marshall's worst teams beat one of WVU's best teams in basketball.

However, the agendas of both programs are completely different. WVU does not need to play Marshall. Personally I don't think Marshall needs to play WVU either. I'm not sure why the game really needs to be played at all, but to each his own. Good luck against Louisville on Saturday. Those guys have taken it to another level. I definitely wouldn't want to see them on our schedule this season. They might just be the best team in the country.

Good gawd, lets move on. Some of our fans need to get off the WVU nutsack. It reeks of desperation. We don't need them guys.

Idiot,

You have no right to use the word "us" in relation to our great university. You have no relationship with us, nor with WVU. You are just some non-alumni idiot troll.

UNLV is in, umm, Nevada. Grand Canyon is in, umm, Arizona, and is a private school. UNLV and Nevada (Reno) have played in every sport since UNLV became a seperate school in the 1960s. Arizona and Arizona State have likewise, since before Arizona was a state.

NO Marshall fan cosiders the Marshall-USPAM relationship in any way similar to Michigan - eastern (sic) Michigan. And Michigan and Michigan State are in the same conference and play every year.

Ban this idiot troll.

There are dozens of examples that are the same relationship as WVU and Marshall that don't play.. see above. Ole miss and southern miss play every year? Nope. Ohio state and OU play every year? Nope. If they did I'm sure ohio state would certainly agree to come to Athens every other year. Get real.

Can we ban Sam C already?

It may not be Michigan/Eastern Michigan, but it's not Rice vs. UTEP either and many Marshall fans see it that way. There are other examples that can be used to show that the game isn't necessary. As mentioned earlier, Purdue has played Ball State a whopping 7 times and all 7 games were in West Lafayette. The last time they played the Cardinals was in 2010.

Like you said he doesn't see it rbag way.. most Herd fans and most WVU fans are reasonable, but there are always exceptions. On this board the exceptions are Sam C and Greenhouse. One of them thinks Marshall's and WVU's programs and history are actually equal and therefore should be treated as such in scheduling, and anyone who disagrees with that is a troll. The other one thinks that because Marshall has a good IAF that somehow trumps any other relevant point made.

Most of us are reasonable and understand the difference in the programs, yet still hope someday the series will happen again. I don't care where the teams play in basketball, I just want it to happen. I really liked the neutral site game personally. And I don't think football is even necessary because the two parties both have delusions of grandeur about their programs that nothing with ever get resolved.
