She's a coder in the IT department at the VA here in NC. She felt like it was coming. I agree we need to cut some fat but it doesn't mean I don't feel for her. I also don't think we are being all that smart and strategic about cutting, instead attempting cliche Elon Musk shock and awe.

Just curious, did your friend receive the letter/email that was sent to something like 2 million govt employees or was she called and and point blank asked to resign her position?

You mean like just about all other fed employees

She had a direct conversation with her supervisor.

To be clear, I'm not trying for a gotcha moment. Just curious of how some of this is unfolding. I have friends that received the letter/email. This is the first I've heard of anyone actually being point blank asked to resign. Do you know if it was spelled out what would happen if she refused? To my understanding, the point of the letter was to see initial impact from willing resignations. I'm not sure how there has been enough time to jump from that into one on one meetings seeking individual resignations. Interesting, lots of unknowns and from what my friends have told me, even more rumors and premature hysteria.

My wife actually talked with her so I don't know many details other than what I provided. I am sure I'll here more after work.

My experience with the VA is that nothing of value has been "coded" in a while. It's a red tape mess of an organization that can barely function. Nothing short of a disaster in fact.

A "coder in IT".

With AI, every single coder on the planet should be on notice.
that is not Trump's fault. But, hey let the govt big titty continue down the path it is. harsh decisions have to be made. We need to thin the herd by millions of those jobs. You can't sit around and pay people for nothing.

I agree with Raleigh that every coder on the planet should be worried about their job, regardless of whether they work for the gov or not. This has been coming down the road wellllllllll before any change in administration. That segment of the industry is going to be virtually not existent before you know it if AI continues to develop and advance at its current pace. At least Federal employees are being given 8 months worth of benefits in the severance package (thanks Trump?).

Why not? Your employer does.

Depending on the language and how good she is. She will find another gig. AI is good for making boilerplates and helping IT students chear a little, and that's about it.

I believe all Trump is doing with government employees (for now) is notifying those who have been "working" remotely that they have the following options:

1) come back to work in person
2) resign, and we'll basically offer a severance deal through September (quite generous)

So what you’re saying is the “coder in the VA” decided she would rather quit and be paid until September than come into an office. Damn that Trump!!! 😉

well, this thread didn't go the way you were hoping.

I wasn't hoping for it to go any particular direction. I was just sharing and rather than being a perpetual ass, had you really read my original post, you'd see I agree we need to cut some fat. I also said that I didn't agree with shock and awe management. But like every post I make, all you see is, he's a liberal, let me act like a dick.

My wife talked with her last night. She is not a coder (my error). She is a programmer that builds and maintains the portals that veterans use to access something related to their healthcare via VA Hospitals. She's worked there for 12 years.

Based on the e-mail that went out, her boss brought four of them in yesterday and encouraged them to go ahead and resign, saying the writing was on the wall.

My response was that is a little different than being forced to resign and if I am her, I wouldn't. Instead, let her boss and the other three resign, because they are just reducing staff. I also said I felt like maybe her boss was protecting their own ass.

They should take the deal if they are thinking about leaving. If not, Trump as the leader of the Executive Branch can just start getting rid of people. Not saying he will but, he is in charge of the executive branch.

Ooof, I'd say you are on to something with your speculation regarding the boss. Being as though the email was just created and sent, there should have been very little conversation where any action is encouraged. This email went out to pretty much everyone that works for the government, for a manager to take the action that you are describing is reckless, at best, but more than likely showing incompetence in his/her own role. That manager has no idea, at this point, if the sector he/she works in will even be affected, let alone specific jobs. Employees that show this kind of judgment, and take this kind of action, solidify the opinion that there needs to be a housecleaning of government employees.

She loves her job and really enjoys working with the seniors, somehow, someway. She doesn’t want to leave.

I agree with you 100%. This girl is 32 years old and it this is her first full-time job. As you can imagine, she is scared to death. My wife is a little bit of a mentor for her.

I hate it whenever someone loses their job, but this happens in the private sector on a regular basis. Inefficient companies downsize all the time. The difference is this is government and nobody has ever taken on the responsibility of truly attempting to shrink the size of government until now. I hope she can move her skill set to the private sector. I truly wish her well.

Agree. I just had to downsize two. We had expanded one of our teams from 16 to 22 to start 2024. At the end of the year, it was clear that one pilot and one market just weren't going to get the traction (they were finding some success but not enough to make their roles viable). Fortunately, we were able to find one of them a new role within the company.

It sucks for them and for the supervisor who has to deliver the message but we are in the business to make a profit, so that's what we do.
