Find News Near Me
Smithfield, N.C.
— A Johnston County woman was wounded late Thursday during an apparent home invasion, but she got some shots off herself at the fleeing intruders.

Barbara and Sam Temple were in their home on N.C. Highway 210 near Smithfield at about 9 p.m. when two men broke in, Barbara Temple said.

The home had been burglarized a few weeks ago, when thieves made off with $27,000, she said. After that, she bought a 9-millimeter handgun for protection.

During Thursday's break-in, Barbara Temple said she grabbed her gun.

"When I got the gun, they realized that I had that gun, and that is when my leg got hit,” she said.

Despite being shot in the leg, she opened fire on the intruders, who ran off without taking anything from the home.

“I’m just hoping that they get whoever done it because we’ve been through terror," she said.

Johnston County deputies were investigating the incident Friday, but no arrests have been made.

I wonder if she'd have been shot had she not pulled a gun? That could have turned out much worse for her. The problem I see here is that she immediately escalated the situation when she pulled the gun out. This is exactly the situation I described when giving a reason for me NOT owning a gun. Most robbers would be content with just stealing your stuff. You can replace stuff. But the second you pull a gun you put the robber in a position that he now has to shoot or be shot. So unless I move to an extremely high crime area (which I wouldn't), I believe I'm safer without one.

You prefer to just have emboldened lawbreakers continually break into your home hoping there's some magic line of morality they won't cross?

GK, you couldn't be more wrong. You make the first class example of what defense instructors tell students not to do. Somebody breaks in your house and if you assume they are not going to do you harm then in most cases you are wrong. Most petty burglars(as you mention above) break in when they know people are not there. Mostly when you are at work or they know you are on vacation, etc. Most petty burglars do not repeat the same house over and over. They hit and move. They typically are not armed as the men in her situation were.

What if she didn't have a gun and they would have killed the old couple and they had not defense?

A few weeks ago a couple like this was brutally murdered and their house burnt down by two men. Matter of fact they were found up your way in Lewisburg, WV. They got into a shootout with police there and the couple bodies were in the back of a truck.

You make the first wrong classic assumption. What if they are not going to do me harm? Well, choir boys are not breaking into your house.

I have taken classes from cops and detectives. They say just remember the cops are not going to show up until something bad has happened and/or it is too late. If somebody comes into your house they are there for no good.

I have one rule. You break into my house, you take your life into your own hands. To me it is the same as a Russian Mig flying over Washington. I will defend at all cost.

Somehow, I knew you were going to write what you did. Frankly, it is naïve. I appreciate you thinking about the good in people. But, people breaking into your house, knowing you are there, are not there as the Welcome Wagon.

What kind of fighters are there? The Quick and The Dead, Drill Sergeant. This lady did well.

I can honestly say that I didn't have "some magic line of morality they won't cross" in mind when I made the decision not to carry a gun.

How many times have you had to defend your house with a gun herdman?

I have never had to use my homeowners insurance. I still have it. It only takes once. Just ask the lady in the article. To me it is an insurance policy. Hopefully, I never have to use it.

I hope you don't need to use it either. Look...I'm really not anti gun. I'm not against anyone owning them if they choose to do so. I just believe that their ownership is an individual decision. For me, it is a personal decision that I've arrived at with plenty of thought. They're not for me. I've read quite a bit on this and I believe that based on statistics that my family is at higher risk with a gun present in the household then they are without one. They are at risk for many reasons that have nothing to do with the commission of a break in or robbery. You will tell me I'm wrong. That's fine. Numerous studies say that I'm not. In the meantime, you can continue to protect your family the way that makes you feel comfortable. I won't try to change your mind. It works for you. I'll continue the way that works for me as well.

Don't think this is something I haven't given thought to either. My business was robbed at knifepoint last month. We had been very fortunate because of the nature of video lotteries and the cash on hand, they are easy targets and get robbed frequently. We have gone 10 years without incident. We've had several employee thefts (a MUCH higher liklihood), but this was our first incident of an external robbery. So I know the frustration and sense of helplessness that is associated with being robbed.

By the way, a three days after the the robbery....

They caught the second guy last week in Washington crossing into to Canada.

Keep in mind, the intruders were armed before they ever entered the home. They weren't packing for shits-and-giggles. They were armed in case they encountered someone in the home. You kill a potential witness, then there are no witnesses. Most likely they would have shot the lady when they encountered her. Fortunately, she was armed as well, which likely prevented her from being killed.
