How to lose $40M/year

we couldn't keep up financially with the AAC either. The FCS route would be the best choice for UCONN
Yeah, nice try, UConn.

Take the football back to FCS and join the Big East in b-ball. It could be too late with as many teams as they’ve added. However, I doubt they’d deny them with that ESPN home turf.

AAC schools receive about 5.5 million more per year in payouts from the AAC than we do from C USA. That payout is about to grow several million as well.

I'd venture to say we could do a lot with an extra 9-10 million a year. (Aka an extra 30% athletic budget)

The conference is not a power 5 and Uconn needs to quit spending like it. But I don't see how you can say their problem is being in a league that's about to be paying its members 10x what CUSA is generating for us.

Yes we could. With any sort of success in the AAC comes the media revenue share etc. We will still be BE so still get the Bowl payouts. To say you won't be financially successful in the AAC is basically saying you won't be successful in the AAC.

UCONN problems started when the old Big East collapsed. To many minor sports supported at a P5 level. The school had to bail out the athletic department to the tune of $34 mil in 2017. They are having a hard time accepting the fact they are now a mid major school financially.

They bring the New York City tv market to the big 10. That is huge. It has nothing to do with the quality of their athletic programs. Follow the dollars and you will find the answers.

Rutgers has also been struggling with their Big 10 inclusion. There are plenty of articles talking about Rutgers going over budget. Granted, part of that was because they weren't getting full share until a few years in. But now, they aren't exactly producing like they should.

Also, Rutgers is an AAU member. It is basically the first thing the Big 10 will look at if they want to consider you for joining the conference.

"Is it worth this much debt if a good season means, oh, 7-5 and a trip to the Birmingham Bowl?"

This is the part that stuck out to me. Folks should realize that Marshall is in this boat too - we spend about double our revenue as well, its just on a smaller scale (our $30 million budget versus UConn's $80 million budget).

Also, we find ourselves in the same situation as UConn - our best season in the last 16 years, we went 13-1, won our conference, and ended up in a mid-December bowl against a MAC team. It would take lightning inside a bottle inside another bottle comprised entirely of lightning for us to make any kind of national noise in FBS.

With all the NYC pro teams and inner city colleges, Rutgers is down the list as a team of interest in that town. Especially now with them struggling so badly in both major sports.

More people in NYC root for ND than Rutgers.

The ACC goofed when they took BC over UConn.

Marshall brings to AAC the following: 1) geographical continuity. 2) natural/ historical rivalries. 3). tradition. 4) brand recognition and 5). fans to opponent’s stadiums. We won’t bring a large TV market but then neither do the other current AAC teams. They may be located in large metropolitan areas, but that does not guarantee a fan base or the TV market. Ex. UConn, ECU, UC, UCF. Just like Rutgers didn’t bring NY market to B10.

In fairness, for networks like the B1G Network, it's not about viewers, it's about subscribers. If you can get a cable system to pick up your network and place it on their primary Premium Sports Tier, anybody who wants to watch ESPN Ocho and Fox Sports Atlantis will also have to subscribe to your network by proxy, and you'll get a portion of that subscriber's premium charge, even if they never watch a single game on your network.

Sorry, but the average NYC sports fan isn't busting his balls to watch Rutgers. They are WAY down on the totem poll for a piece of that pie.
