WV has to be one of the only states that doesn’t already have something like this when it comes to high school football championship venues.

Yup, and I think it's a great idea to alternate between Huntington and Morgantown. Does wonders for both of the local economies, and allows the kids to play on the biggest fields in the state.

Talking to people though, it seems that Wheeling has the state championship committee by the nuts. I'll be surprised if Wheeling loses it.

The fix, as it has been for two decades, is in. Wheeling's casino and other mobbed up interests will insure the games are played there.

Of course, the games should be played in a more geographically logical location. The people in charge don't care.

Deep playoffs should be played at multiple locations. State championships should be at the same location on the same day. Tradition and stability are necessary. Being able to watch three or four games in a single day will result in crowds worthy of a state championship.

This wouldn’t be a bad spot for a High School State Championship game…

Looks like Wheeling, Charleston, Bluefield and Huntington/Morgantown - all turned in bids.

Not sure if Bluefield/Princeton has the hotel rooms and amenities to handle all the crowds.

I say rotate every year on a north - south basis - one year Wheeling, the next year Huntington, then Morgantown, the next year Charleston. Everyone wins and each location has 3 years to plan and get everything lined up. jmho

Yep this is a good option and helps with travel from various schools in various years instead of forcing southern schools or eastern schools to always have to make long treks

This is nothing more than cities jockeying for all the money that comes with hosting, interests of the actual kids playing is secondary to most of these people. If you polled all of the high school football players in WV on where they wanted to play (their home fields excluded), I would bet a significant amount of money that they would pick the Marshall/wvu stadiums of the options.

Not a knock on the other locations, but the facilities for football are drastically better than what they have in Charleston, Wheeling, Bluefield, etc. and it is not even close.

I'd also like to see Marshall make a strong bid for the soccer championship. With the nice facilities and explosion of interest in soccer in the area, I think we could make a strong case.

The WVSSAC, which is to say the principals of the various high schools around the state, is a totally corrupt organization. It will put this deal in Wheeling, because the mob, which is to say the actual mafia, which totally controls Wheeling and the entire region around it, will pay out the most bribes and kickbacks. No discussion of whether Morgantown has this or that, or Huntington has this or that, is relevant. It is all about bribes and kickbacks, which is why this deal left its natural home in Charleston for a place that is south of exactly 3 high schools and north of, well, every other one, three decades ago.

The fix is in.

If it saddens you that our high school principals are in bed with the mafia, well, that is a topic for another board on another day.

High school principals in bed with the mafia? That is rich. The SSAC, possibly. The legislators who represent Wheeling, YEAH. But principals? LOL!
Solid examples? Do tell.

Laidley field is sub par
I agree but no difference then wheeling, but added benefit of central location in a more populous area with the Gold Dome as a backdrop.. but yes still sub par vs other stadiums within the state.

I personally think wheeling stadium hosting the state championship every year needs to change, hope they can figure it out

Principals run the SSAC, in theory, not in reality. It’s a good ole boy network of old WV thugs.

The last thing the WVSSAC is concerned about is the best experience for the kids.

Yeah, it's good ole boy, but principals don't cater to the mafia. That's nuts.

Not only that, I heard that the high school principals were actually the ones running the mops-for-props program and successfully hiding it from Pruett.

First it was Martha Stewart, then it was Catholic priests, and now it's high school principals!

Produce proof about the principals or stfu. Your slanderous accusations are just dumb.

He may lay low for a day or two. He got busted lying in a couple of other threads. Never fear. He'll be back, ignoring being called out, intentionally change what he claimed and pretending what he said was accurate.

Google "Delaware North Corporation". The primary funder of the Wheeling bid. DNC is the mafia. Wheeling is a mob town.

Why are simple facts so hard for people to understand? You actually think that in a fair discussion, somebody said, "you know, what we should do is play the game in a HS stadium, (which at the time had a grass field) on the very edge of the state far from everybody." Right. If you believe that I have ocean front property in Arizona I can sell you.

I can’t believe I actually looked up something Sammy suggested. I looked up Delaware North. So ok what’s your point?

They are a hospitality company that might have mob ties. That does not prove anything about corruption in the playoff system. Not saying it is not there, but we don’t know.

You are making assumptions based off no facts.

Says nothing about the principals being corrupt. I asked for proof of that or stfu. And you provide nothing.

I bet you have a tin foil hat on and think the lizard people are real.

Right, so they just all actually believe that playing at a HS stadium on the very edge of the state is the thing to do.

Right.

Thank you for proving my point.

Again, I said that corruption could be taking place. We do not know. And what you told me proved nothing. You are making assumptions with no facts whatsoever.
Again you claim that school administrators are corrupt. Please provide proof of that.

You reply above proves the point I made previously. You are creating conspiracy theories. Is your Tin foil hat on too tight?

Bingo. Kids want to play where the guys they look up to play and experience those kinds of facilities. It's the only chance most of these kids will have to experience that. It's downright unfair to them to even consider anything else.

Bluefield is not a good choice for the same reason that Wheeling is not. Although Mercer County has a lot more to do than Wheeling. While downtown Bluefield isn't doing too well, the surrounding region is full of things to do. Wheeling is where people from Youngstown go to feel better about their lives. Mitchell Stadium, which is a native stone WPA era structure but has been kept up well, has a lot of history and charm. Wheeling Island Stadium is a dirtier, smaller, and more charmless version of Laidley Field.

BTW, Marshall played VPI at Mitchell Stadium three times in the 1950s. Back when people traveled by train, and Blacksburg was very hard to get to, VPI farmed its games out all over Virginia, including a lot of games in Bluefield, even though its actually 350 feet from the Virginia state line inside WV.

I don't understand how anyone could pass up playing our high school championships in the college stadiums. Hell it could be at Potomac State and SWVCTC and it would still be a better option than Wheeling. If WVSSAC passes on this opportunity for the kids of this state then I would assume some type of investigation would be implemented by the good people representing our state.

Also a solid recruiting tool for head coaches.
"This is the next level for you. Locker rooms, campus, training facilities, etc., come play for us."

While this is true, I really just want the kids to have the best experience possible. And Wheeling Stadium isn't the it...hell, Texas has high school stadiums nicer than Wheeling.

Well, do you all think that those in the SSAC who made this decision can shortly expect to find bloody and severed horses' heads in their beds??

The "head honchos" of the MOB in and around Wheeling cannot be happy! Just ask Sammy!!!

My dad was the president of the WVSSAC multiple times. The level of ignorance in this thread is astounding.
