As you look at the numbers, here's a chart for reference to see how each grade would be categorized:

1-49 - poor
50-55 - below average
56-64 - average
65-70 - above average
71-79 - good
80-89 - very good
90-99 - outstanding

“What if” might as well be the theme for Marshall’s 2021 campaign. What if the Herd did not collapse in the fourth quarter against both ECU and Appalachian State? What if Rasheen Ali had let the onside kick against Middle Tennessee State go for that extra half of a yard? What if Grant Wells did not get hurt against WKU? Unfortunately, we will never know the answers to these questions, however Saturday’s loss was hard to stomach, especially watching a team that I love collapse in the second half after losing their offensive leader. Stone Scarcelle received the top PFF grade for Marshall’s offense against WKU with a 75.5. Now for a look at how the rest of the offense performed in the loss.

Quarterback:

Before being injured in the second quarter, Grant Wells was 10 of 14 passing for 76 yards and one touchdown. His first half performance resulted in a PFF grade of 63.7. Luke Zban finished the game and was 16 of 25 passing for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Zban’s performance received a grade of 47.2.

Running Back:

After Wells went down to injury, it was easy for WKU to key on the run game, thus bottling Rasheen Ali up during the second half of the game. Ali finished with 24 carries for 99 yards, while also adding seven catches for 17 yards. PFF graded Ali at 72.6. Sheldon Evans received a grade of 64.5.

Wide Receiver:

As noted above, Stone Scarcelle led the Herd’s wide receivers with a grade of 75.5. Scarcelle totaled two catches for 16 yards. Shadeed Ahmed was next in line grading at 72.4, while Jayden Harrison received a grade of 62.6. Corey Gammage finished with a grade of 59.3 and Willie received a grade of 54.5.

Tight End:

On a personal note, it has been great to see Devin Miller back in action, especially catching the touchdown pass from Wells early in the second quarter. Miller received a grade of 57.9 in the loss to WKU, while Xavier Gaines was graded at 56.3.

Offensive Line:

Will Ulmer was Marshall’s top graded offensive lineman at 65.4 (69.4 run block, 50.2 pass block) on 81 snaps. Alex Mollette also played 81 snaps and received a grade of 65.0 (61.4 run block, 72.6 pass block). Ethan Driskell was graded at 64.9 (65.8 run block, 57.9 pass block) on 32 snaps, while Alex Salguero graded a 64.2 (62.3 run block, 70.9 pass block) while playing 53 snaps. James Magee rounded out the top five on the offensive line with a grade of 61.5 (56.3 run block, 81.7 pass block) on 69 snaps. Other offensive linemen of note: Dalton Tucker – 60.4 on 40 snaps, Kendrick Sartor – 48.9 on 49 snaps.
