wayyyyyy tooo early i know, but what are the chances we get a completely packed house for this one? besides kstate, vt, and wvu, this is the biggest team to visit the joan.....i say 38-40.....wishful thinking? expectations will once again be high and with good weather and a bten team....i dunno...

Only one team has ever sold out the Joan, and I don't see that changing. If they won't come to see a pretty good VA Tech team, I don't see them coming to see a poor Perdue team.

50$ endzone tickets. The end.

There have been 6 sellouts in the 160+ gamed at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

09-07-91 vs New Hampshire (JCE 1st game)
12-19-92 vs Youngstown St (I-AA NC)
12-16-95 vs Montana (I-AA NC)
11-15-97 vs OHIO
09-08-07 vs WVU
09-10-10 vs WVU

I know for a fact the your chart is wrong. 2001 and 2006 just at first glance are way off.

You are correct. 2001 is most definitely a mistake. I probably shouldn't have posted that one because I have made several corrections and that is an older file that was on my phone.

Bottom line is Marshall does not sell out games.

The highest in 2006 was Memphis on 10-28-06 with 29,204. I also have a chart of lowest attended games and seemed to have crossed those two.

The higest attended game on 2001 was against BGSU on 09-29-01 with 32,034.

Here is a list of the highest attended games of each season from 1991-2013

MU had 12 sellouts before the expansion in 2000, and has had two since the 2000 expansion.

MU's capacity from 1991-1993 was 28,000; the capacity from 1994-1999 was 30,000; capacity from 2000-2012 was 38,019; and since the addition of the luxury suites in 2013, the capacity has bumped to 38,200+.

In the first three seasons (1991-1993), MU had five sell-outs: 33,116 against UNH (1991), 28,272 against Furman and 31,304 against YSU (1992), and 29,464 against GSU and 29,218 against YSU (1993).

MU's next sell-out was in 1995 against Montana (32,106), then again in 1996 against Montana (30,052). No. 8 was against Ohio in 1997, when 32,012 showed up. No. 9 was in 1998 against Miami, with 33,204 in attendance.

In 1999, MU had three sell-outs: 30,194 against Temple, 30,203 against Toledo, and 30,081 against UNI.

That is twelve before the expansion to 38k. There have been two since - WVU in 2007 and 2010. Fourteen total.

Marshall does poor job of marketing games outside of Huntington. Ticket prices are high considering the local economy. Concessions for this area are outrageous. I said "this area" so try not to compare with the biggies. Never see any attempt to market our games statewide. Must be some underlying fear that WVU will complain. This said even if we have a beautiful day/evening game on September 5 it will not sell out. JMO

VT was hurt by the overpriced seats and the 44-7 beatdown we took from Ohio the week before.

If we can get TV to cooperate for once with a 7pm Saturday game and the rain holds off, we can at least make a run at 3rd highest attendance all time.

HERD lacks promotion director and vision of overall marketing...it shouldn't come down to that but we cant wait until 2 weeks before the game and then start promo.

LOL! marshall Ticket prices for a Top 25 team are VERY reasonable. Concessions are very reasonable. Don't make me enlist my other ATL posters on here to inform you that just ONE Falcons game can cost you what one season ticket costs at Marshall.

As for the sellout, I think 100% this game will SELLOUT. Our instate non-rival rivals open with Ga Southern, and are about to go into a swoon of epic proportions. No AD, no OC, and a HC that holds himself on the sidelines while dressing like a coach wanting to make Al Davis' staff.. My question when does Dana sprout his first bling, like the flying WV with a skull in it perhaps? I dunno.mWeird isn't he? I I wonder are all WV u coaches color blind or is black and silver their new colors since adopting the U of Michigan colors over the actual state of WV colors. ( it's so fun to kick the eerbillys when their down isn't it!) Run run run Ollie!!!!

Anyhoo, back to the thread at hand.

Yes, we sellout Purdue home opener.

No the promotion people AREN'T that bad. They bend over backwards to try and get butts in the seats, and hopefully this year they do the same.

We do need a 3 game mini package this year with Purdue in it and choose 2 others after season tix are sold.

We have the winningest coach and winningest team in WV, the table has turned, Ollie is running from his shambles....this game sells out and IF we win it Marshall sets attendance records for its time in the Joan.

Seems to me marketing is needed with the visiting teams. No reason why OU and VT does not bring more people. Talk to the Purdue folks and promote buses to come.

If an undefeated Marshall couldn't sellout their stadium, there is no way this game will sell out either.

I think we are overlooking a key element here... Purdue cant get people to come to their home games. There is no way they are going to sell out their section plus the leftover seats in Marshall sections.

The chances of the game being sold out are ZERO unless we give away a bunch of tickets... er... I mean "provide tickets to corporate sponsors" like they do at bowl games.

Different scenario,

VT we had Tan man as HC. We couldn't run an offensive series that mattered.

Now.....We have a Top 25 team, a new QB, a HC that wins.

Doc has rebuilt us.....people will come.

Sellout.

Hey TheGre this is Huntington WV and not Atlanta so don't pretend that prices here are not high when in this town and economy they are. We know because we can go to Cincinnati and Cleveland to see what you say but again if you want to see the Joan sold out some prices have to be lowered. If Huntington and the surrounding area ever enjoys a business boom then yes. Nothing wrong with offering $5 tickets in the end zone to area kids every game or to vets or to police/fire.

this

we will not sellout without help from our opponent. Ohio brings more people than Purdue will...

If the game is at 7, we could have about 32,000 Marshall fans. We would need Purdue to bring 7,000 or so. That is not going to happen but we could realistically have 35,000+.

Thank you for your concern. Why are you here?

coog queen is here because he is a massive loser without a life. He is a wee wee clone. I doubt his own want them on the Cougar boards.

Bb and 627 are dead on. Number one priority in business is know your market. It's obvious Marshall hasn't figured out who to market to or how. It isn't Huntington or Cabell Co.

And yes. A $50 ticket will not fly here or at most G5 schools.

I think we will have about 35K. KState was so full because they filled their section, which outside of WVU was as good as it gets. I don't think Perdue will do the same, however there will be some attraction with a big name program. The marketing folks just plain shanked the VT game by pricing tickets high when we had a team that was struggling on the field playing an excellent opponent.

I been around here for like 10-11 years now, and I'm getting to the point where you can guess a poster's age by their opinions.

BISON remember the week before OHIO blew us out 44 to something. We lost 1,000s of fans right there for the Va. Tech game.

If we couldn't sell out Va Tech, a better program that is an easier drive, no way we sell out Purdue.

Funny EER, same to WVU now your the homecoming favorite. Lots of empty seats up there these days!

Do us favor and get Hold myself some Kwell lotion.

Those Dallas prostitutes carry crabs ya know!

Well..

Pros: It's a P5 school. We're coming off a huge season with hopes of duplicating that.

Cons: P5 or not, Purdue sucks. Also, a lot of fans hold off a few games until they see if we're going to be good before they show up.

My guess: Not a sellout. Hope I'm wrong though.

There is no reason that Marshall could not be heard on 93R in St. Marys. The other station in the market, 99.5 in New Martinsville, carries the Mountaineers.

Then someone please explain the K State game to me. They were terrible for the prior year going into that game.

I don't think Purdue was much worse at the time but we managed a very good crowd.

Also, the VA Tech game in Huntington was also the same day wvu got raped by #2 LSU. Many wal mart wvu fans went to the game up there.

K-State brought a very healthy number of fans to Huntington so I'm guessing there were only 33K or so Herd fans there. Not sure how Purdue travels but they've probably had fewer butts in the seats than we have the last few years.

Also, that was the first true big-time team to come here (Temple doesn't count) so it was much more of a novelty for our fans back then.

That being said, home opener with a good Herd team at 7pm on Saturday with no rain will draw a huge crowd I think.

I think we should have played Illinois. I will be at the purdue game. Have I earned my "fan" status?
