It appears Vlad got bad info about Ukraine. Didn't expect them to put up a fight....threw his foreign service dude into house arrest for not letting him know.

To make matters worse, Putin's pissed that money allocated for the military was stolen/embezzled by thugs on his leadership team.

Putin 'has placed the head of the FSB's foreign intelligence branch under house arrest because he is furious at security services for failing to warn him' that Ukraine could fiercely resist invasion.
