Well, if it came up on my TV that Thuggie had a fatal heart attack or stoke, was picked up (again) blind drunk on his way from a casino, or the the NCAA just backed up the paddy wagon to the big jello mould (built, de-asbestosed, and twice remodeled at 100% state taxpayer expense) and hauled everybody away, I would not be any more surprised than I am by the sun coming up tommorrow.
But, assuming none of those things happen, remember history. The two esentual things to remember about USPAM are that its fans are so delusional that eventually they become dissatisfied with whatever product they are given. "9-3 is not acceptable." And, the administraton (not just in sports but in all things) chews up people that care about it and spits them out.
Bobby Bowden sucessfully transitoned USPAM from a small college to a mid-major, while saddled with a dump stadium no one could get to in pre-interstates WV. He got run off. Fat Donnie took that mid-major and made it one of the better mid-major teams of its era, albeit by playing the easiest of schedules. He got run off. Crazy Gale kept a WVU team afloat, again playing a diet of small colleges, and made the tournament fairly regularly. For his trouble he was goaded into joining the old Big East and rewarded with a nervous breakdown and an uncermonoious teatment of "Gale, Gale who? " by the current crowd. Van Zant, a state native, had a reasonable baseball team, to the extent that anyone cares, and got fired. And, of course, there is Bill Stewart. Who was more or less murdered via a broken heart because "9-3 is not acceptable."
Eventually the fact that this WVU season, and the next and the next and the next will end as every WVU season ever has, with the basketball team walking off in defeat, will cause the delusionals to push out Thuggie for the next genius.
Because these idiots ACTUALLY BELIEVE that they belong in the same converstaion as the teams of actual national significance.
