He didn't say there were only 41 players left; he said they didn't feel they could put 41 on the field safely; that is his assumption. They didn't want that game after the starters left; plain and simple. When you're in a hole, quit digging..... Spears should do this.

I am still trying to figure that one out. I thought as part of the scholarship you got 3 meals per day. So what was the big deal

There are, by simple definition, 44 players required for a 2-deep. Additionally you need a place kicker, a punter and a long snapper. That’s 47. Then you have to hope that the 41 you have doesn’t have an over representation from any one position group. I mean sure, it would be fun to watch 330lb offensive linemen play cornerback, or a safety play DT, but that’s a little dangerous for the players.

But yeah, your pride is way more important, so they should have played.

I personally changed my mind on this and agree with you. I was po’d at first and wanted someone to blame but after looking at the depth chart, there was just no way for us to play.

They should fine half the schools who played in bowls for making the fans watch a watered down, uninteresting product. Often top players didn’t play, many players were already in the portal, stands were empty, and any excitement was lacking. This was the worst bowl season I ever remember watching.

Me too.
That live radio interview was some word salad of explanation.
I like the sentiment to give extra nutrition but it obviously didn't land with football players and create some loyalty.
The AD had to know a mass exodus was coming before the year started becuase of how they were playing this.
The $100K is whatever - the bad press is going to cost much more.

So where is the f***ing fine for Southern Miss? They (the administration) caused this! How hard would it have been to wait till after bowl games to offer Huff a contract. USM (a fellow conference member) caused Marshall, the conference, the bowl and Army "damage" too! Yes, I know you can hire whomever you want whenever you want but the saying "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do something" applies here. You would think there is a clause in the conference membership agreements to not take any actions to harm the conference and fellow members. Their actions cost the conference too, at least Marshall had the safety, health and practicality factors on their side. I hope they lose every game for years.

What did the admin think was going to happen as soon as that window opened in this day and age of the portal?
They rolled the dice and crapped out.

Unless I made the playoff, I would consider turning down most every bowl game from.now on unless thus transfer thing changes.
