Baseball Signees

When you take transfers, especially grad transfers who only have a year to play, you expect immediate results. You don't have time to develop, so you need plug-and-play guys. Marshall baseball didn't do that in this signing period:

Noah Farrar (Huntington/Potomac State): 8 at bats, 1 hit. If the kid wasn't good enough to play at Potomac State, what the fvck is he doing at Marshall?
Caden Kaiser (Ohio State): .254 avg., 1 HR, 59 at bats. The kid has 101 career at bats with a .228 average and 2 HRs, He doesn't run (2 career stolen bases). What do we expect him to do for us?
Alex McKay (Mercer): Last season, he pitched 9.1 innings and had a 9.64 ERA . . . and that was his best season in his career. As a sophomore, his ERA was 45.00 (not 4.50) over .2 innings As a freshman, it was 13.50 over 1.1 innings. So he wasn't good enough to really get on the field as a freshman or sophomore, and when he did as a junior, he got his tits lit up.
Ethan Murdoch (Canada): He's Canadian. Not sure if it matters.
Jack Firestone (Akron): .252 avg., 17 HRs. 206 at bats with 90 strikeouts. So the kid is basically going to hit a bomb or strike out. He strikes out 43% of his at bats. I am not sure I have seen that at any level before. The worst strikeout hitter in MLB history (sorry Adam Dunne) is Mark Reynolds. I believe he struck out once every 2.6 at bats. This new Marshall kid strikes out once every two at bats.

Somebody needs to ask this new coach what the hell he is doing.

How the country will fail and fall.

Yesterday, I had an interesting conversation with a veteran who was confined to a wheelchair. We chatted awhile and got on various topics.

He had a good point that really made me think. He said the country will fall and fail when it becomes not worth fighting for anymore. He said we are on that trajectory. And, not just actual fighting but worth paying taxes for. Worth working for. Worth personally investing in. Woth starting a business in. Woth defending.

He said we are on that path and believes it will come at some point. It won't be China or Russia or even some internal uprising. He said it will fail when people say it is not worth defending in terms of fighting for or defending or working for.

Damn, that was a dep conversation. Can America be saved? I don't know.

Marshall Soccer Rolling

Both the mens and women's teams are undefeated with the women having one tie. They take,on Liberty on Sunday in a nationally televised game on ESPN+. Liberty is 6-0 on the season.

The men took down High Point last night and are ranked 2nd in the country. They have only given up 2 goals through 5 games and this could end up being another special year for the herd.

JMU - A Very Light Scouting Report

Just noticed that JMU is still getting votes in both polls and, since I was at the Bucknell game this past Saturday, wanted to share some thoughts.

JMU played like a shadow of the team I saw last season. I don't feel like the score (38-3) represented the game as I saw. JMU more wore-them-down than beat-them-up. 3-0 after the 1st quarter where is seemed no one could string anything together.

Personnel-wise, I liked their RB (#6), though nearly half of his rushing yards came on a single run, and a couple of their receivers. Their QB was not really a factor (3 of 11 for 15 yds). #2 may be starting by the time Marshall sees them. In the trenches, JMU's OL was better than Bucknell's D-front but not by a big margin. Again, even though the score implies otherwise, there was no domination up front.

Defensively, JMU is undersized but quick. This seems a choice as I know a couple players local to me that have been recruited there and then moved from LB to DE; from Edge-rusher to 3-tech. And this is despite running an odd-front where you would expect the dudes with their hands in the dirt to be a little larger. The match-up with MU will be all about speed vs size.

Not sure JMU deserves any national votes but their play from this point on will take care of that. Overall, they seemed like a .500 team, at best.

I'd like to add that the game-time atmosphere was electric. It certainly looked (and sounded) like a sellout. The student section was huge and packed tight, sitting behind the Marching Royal Dukes (around 400-strong). I was disappointed that there weren't more interactive moments to engage the fans. It was loud, just not coordinated, just like I have complained about Marshall for years. Oh, and, no surprise, only about a third of the student-section made it into the second half. Of course, they come to Huntington this year so it will be our students leaving the stadium early.

Cabins

My realtor knows that I am looking for a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Most things that pop up are in the middle of a desert on flat land with no trees near Joshua Tree National Park, but this one that just hit the market today is different.

About three hours from Yosemite, three hours from Orange County, and only about 20 part-time neighbors within a five mile radius. Put a hot tub and outdoor television on the porch, do some light changes on the inside, and I think we may have another property to add to the portfolio. 2.5 acres is enough for me to be able to piss off of the porch like you hillbillies, and the price is magnificent:

And more rustic but on 26 acres with views to kill:

What do the experts say?

Recently I have run into a situation that is so complicated to me that I plan to make an appointment with a lawyer. I know this board has experts in banking, finance, and real estate so I thought I would see if any of you might have run across anything similar. This might be a little long so stay with me.

Over half a century ago, my family made a verbal deal to purchase the land where my house is now located. Before formal paperwork could be completed, the owner changed his mine and wanted to keep a small 50 x 100 strip of the property, but he kept the price the same. My family reluctantly agreed.

After I came in possession of the property, I tried through three different owners to buy the small 50ft section to restore the land to its original dimensions.

Here is where it gets complicated. The present owner has agreed to sell me the property, but says she has to wait five years. During the 2016 flooding, her little house was damaged and a few years later, FEMA had some left over recovery money and built her a new house.

Since she still owed on her old house and lot and the land I want, FEMA paid off her mortgages before building her new house. Now she says she has to wait five years (actually three now) before she is allowed to sell any of her property.

I know that her house and lot are on a separate tax ticket from the land I want. Is there any way to split that off or do I have to wait years?

I’m still going to the lawyer, but I’m interested to see what some of you say about what I can expect.
