20th Street rumor

I am sure those who park in the West Lot will have concerns but I'd think MU will work to accomodate them make this great for all involved. Excellent idea and much needed. jmho

It would be nice to see a major upgrade to the pregame experience to get more people to come early.

I hope they also will address the disjointed team entrance to the field. So much potential there with Thunderstruck but we seem to screw it up every year.

I must be in the minority of people who could care less if they ever heard Thunderstruck again. It just doesn't fire me up at all anymore.

I think the intro this year will be MUCH better in quality AND content. I look for some significant changes coming.

Hearing plans are being drawn up to rework the entrance to the parking lot and close 20th between 3rd and 5th, using the space for a kiddie play area and a stage with live music. New coach believes game day atmosphere is lacking.
How would the new coach know what kind of game day atmosphere exists?? Has he been here for a non COVID game?

I think there are better places to put this if they don't close 20th street permanently; but if permanent, I'd be all for just adding this space to the campus property, turn it into green space for all of this. They could just interrupt 20th street for those two blocks for good and donate the property to the university. They could also close down the alley between the west lot and west lot extension from McDonalds to the new area; enter the lots by multiple entrances on both 3rd and 5th Avenues; ending up with more parking. Regardless of what they do, at a minimum, 20th street between 3rd and 5th should be turned into one way; either direction.

I called for this several years ago. It always seemed like a natural idea to increase the tailgating atmosphere. They will need to do 2 curb cuts from 3rd Ave on to the lot I would think, but that’s not a big expense.

It might be a good idea to close 20th in order to enlarge the west lot so more money can be made from parking. However, if you are going toward the river on 20th, this means you have to go several blocks east, then turn left onto one of those narrow streets to get to 3rd Ave. to go downtown. Likewise, if you want to go south on 20th, you have to go to 16th and circle campus to get there.

How do you close 20th permanently? Wouldn’t that make it even more difficult to get into Steel of WV?? State Electric? Other businesses that are actually functional

Good gracious. They’ll close it for short period of time and then open it up after the game so people can exit the west lot.
Cant believe some shit on the idea. Wow!
That’s not what they were referring to. They were talking about permanently closing 20 th st to expand the west lot etc. read the other posts.

As long as Marshall continues to play that rap crap music there won’t be much of a pre-game experience ... Marshall’s home games are supported financially by the public and not the students.

I’m going to guess that my, as well as many other folk’s season tickets, and any miscellaneous expenses incurred on game day don’t equate to a fraction of even one semester’s worth of tuition. It’s almost like without the students there wouldn’t be a discussion here…you know, considering it’s a university and all.

I realize that. They would never close it permanently. That’s a major thoroughfare to business toward the river.

Oh my gosh, 1991, I haven't seen you in forever. I've got some terrible news - rap became a thing.

Marshall’s home games are supported financially by the public and not the students.

Fun Fact: for the last season which numbers are available for, Marshall ticket sales (for all events, combined) accounted for $3.56 million of the athletic budget. Student fees accounted for $6.4 million, nearly double.

This thread is nearing award winning status... Potential early "thread of the year" candidate.

A few points to consider... The music piped into the stadium pregame is for the players (not the fans) and 18-23 year olds trying to get hyped up for sporting events like rap music. You can listen Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass in the car on the way to the stadium and Barry Manilow on the ride home.

Also, making 20th Street a closed pedestrian walkway is a good idea. I don't know the number of times I have turned on 20th and nearly hit kids/drunks/other pedestrians not paying attention.

Lastly, our gameday experience has been trash for years. We have discussed this at length on here many times. If schools like Wofford and Western Carolina can have play areas for kids, pregame concerts and fan promotions so can we. Gameday is a product. That product starts with fielding a winning team, but this day and age there is more to getting people to come out than beating up on ODU, WKU, MTSU, FIU or any of the other unexciting acronym schools in CUSA.

I understand about the rap before the game but once it starts, the more popular tunes that everyone knows are much more well received. You can see the crowd is more engaged, as should be the case.
If the players are more worried about what rap songs are being played during the game, they have huge focus issues.

During the game I agree... The music is for the fans at that point, so play the shitty Stevie Nicks tune from the Ocean Spray commercial, Mony Mony, Sweet Caroline, etc. If that's what appeals to our fanbase then Im okay with that.

What music would you play then?

It’s typical - you can see when they play YMCA, Sweet Caroline and typical music played at athletic events. Even the students get more into it, we’ve watched them. He’ll, I watched the players do YMCA during the MT game last fall.
Check what other schools and pro teams play. It sure as hell isn’t blaring rap music all the damn game.

Let’s get rid of the horse trough urinals first

No problem: they are in such bad shape that most of them could very well rust through just any day now! Never fear, our forward thinking AD, Hammy, already has a plan in place. Just will put more floor drains in throughout the men's restrooms at the JOAN!! As old H. Ross Perot would say, "Problem Solved"!!!

Any Herd fan who went remember our game at Pitt in Heinz Field a few seasons back? If so, you surely haven't forgot that Pitt's "anthem" is Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline"; they played it off and on from the 1st to the 4th quarters, and then some!! Their students really get into it and it helps create a good atmosphere even if the stadium is only about 50 per cent or so full!
