Interesting read. Talks about what Spears has done in his short tenure at MU and what sort of challenges MU is going to have when the new guy comes in.

I am a little concerned that Gibson is signed, already, for at least 5 years...according to the article.

Some of the comments from around the country are also interesting.

Interesting to note that it mentions strong athletic support and community support for the program. Who'd a thunk it.

No worries about Gibson. He said "this is his last stop". That's all Marshall fans care to hear.

Yup...too bad they don't really know the true meaning behind it.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the statement. I think it would be foolish to firmly plant yourself on either side of it. I truly believe him in that I don't think he's going to be like Huff and actively looking for other jobs. That if this was his last job before retirement, that he'd be content.

However. I do not believe for a second that if he gets us rolling and a couple of the more reputable P4s come calling that he wouldn't answer.

As long as he's not looking past us, then I'm happy.

Just like everyone's thoughts on the following. Why no articles on the Athletic Director position at Marshall? Why no interviews of the President or Board? Outside of a basic I loved my time here and we loved having him article nothing else by the local media has been put out there. I'd like to know why Spears was removed from his position and before anyone says he is staying on til his contract runs out in March 26 that ain't happening. Who will lead the way in the search for a new AD? Just basics stuff that most supporters of Universities nationwide would be demanding to know ( or at least ask and speculate).

While I agree with your first statement, that he wouldn't look past MU, initially, I'm not comfortable he's locked in for 5 years with the highest contract we've ever paid a HC as far as I know.
The biggest complaint has always been, "We never hire a guy with previous HC experience" and this guy is basically giving me Mark Snyder vibes. He's had defenses that weren't the greatest minus a few years here and there, riding the coat tails of the more notable head coach (Tressel for Snyder, Rich Rod for Gibson).

I feel he was a panic hire because MU and their fans were so shocked a young HC, with no connections to MU, would ever leave after such a season (regardless of where).
They had to find someone with some sort of ties to either WV or MU and found Gibson as a means to make themselves (and fans) believe that, "if he's from WV or an MU guy he will remain loyal to the program."

Which is a double edged sword:
For one thing, it went against a huge complaint from fans, "we gotta stop hiring within MU or WV, find ourselves a good motivated guy who'll use MU to elevate his career and leave."
Huff was EXACTLY that...
Now, with the portal, NIL, and the painful reality that MU is NOT a destination for head coaches...MU and the fans are seeing just how vulnerable everything is.
When Huff left, we saw how little MU as a football program means to anyone outside of it.

The other part, is you're going to get someone who may/may not turn out to be successful...the last guys MU hired with any connections to MU or WV, didn't set the world on fire with the fans and didn't win as much as the fans expected (even if some were irrational).
MU may be stuck with a high buyout and 5 win seasons because they decided to give the guy from WV a chance...something they absolutely were tired of a hire or two ago.

Even if Gibson is successful, there's still the issue of losing him to a higher bidder regardless.
But the fans will have to stomach the potential lie he told at his presser about it "being his last stop" which, after seeing how many players and coaches have said similar comments and then bolted on their programs, are somehow legitimately believing it wouldn't happen here?

Hire a WV boy! WV boy comes home! Nothing else to worry about with this fan base. Trying to relive the Pruett years.

I hope he is successful. I hope his recruiting class is all everyone is claiming. He will be given at least 4 years of excuses if it isn't.

I wouldn't get hung up on the contract. We're always giving 4-5 year initial deals and the amount is more about the coaching market today than it is our overspending or going in too much.

Also even if it was a bit too sweet of a deal maybe we're just trying to sweeten the pot enough that prevents another Charles Huff.

I also wouldn't judge Gibson against Doc or Snyder just because of the ties. Maybe it is one of the top criteria, but Huff was the first HC we've hired since Donnan that was an outsider and it ended horribly and he was always out the door.

I really don't think all of this matters either because of NIL and the Portal. Any coach we bring in is going to be fighting uphill battles on all fronts just trying to maintain a roster. We needed a coach that would be happy living in the area and someone the fans are going to support and a native checks those boxes.

Success at our level is going to be the most difficult it has ever been to achieve for a first year HC and even more difficult to sustain.

The only people thinking that way are people like yourself. We're not hiring a "WV Boy" in an effort to recreate Bob Pruett. That was 1/1,000,000 chance and as great of a coach that Pruett was he was handed a national championship caliber team and Randy Moss fell in our laps. Everything that could have aligned in 1996, aligned perfectly.

I like Pruett, but I am not so convinced even he could recreate that level of success in today's college football.

Agree. We hit on all cylinders at the right time back then. The stars aligned. Its a 180 now a days from what that era was like.

We are hiring a WV Boy because “he’s coming home” and….”it’s his last stop”. Period.

Rawleee - I don’t think you believe those are the clinching factors that determined our offer to Coach Gibson?
There is nothing else it could be. Sadly I do. Additionally the fact that he was previously at WPU was also a “plus” in some eyes. His time at NCState? Ehhh. Yes, P4 experience but not the #1s in the hiring determination.

Again, I hope he is successful. Rumors suggest he’s already brought a more relaxed style/attitude/feel to the coaching staff.

I doubt he could either.

Let's say 1999's season happened in 2024...same schedule and same teams with the same results they had back then, now...
Does Pruitt even stick around, or is he gone?
