contradictory color commentary from President Trump, whipsawed stock markets again Thursday.

The week’s selling began Monday after President Trump threatened a tariff increase
Mr. Trump told attendees of a rally in Florida that he was happy to punish China with more tariffs because it had reneged on agreements.

Those comments helped send stocks sharply lower in early trading Thursday,

before the president’s more hopeful comments lifted the mood of markets in the afternoon..

A real story of fake news: Trump’s wealth

President Trump has finally proved, beyond any doubt, that there is such a thing as #FakeNews.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the media conspired to perpetrate a vast fraud on the American people. So-called journalists and their complicit editors colluded — yes, that’s the word — to convince an unwitting public that Trump was a spectacularly successful businessman.

The scale of the ink-fueled myth has been exposed at last, thanks to 10 years’ worth of his tax information obtained by the New York Times, which revealed Trump’s enterprises were flopping on an epic scale.

In 1985, Trump reported losses of $46.1 million from his casinos, hotels and apartment buildings, which hemorrhaged $1.17 billion over the next decade. “Year after year, Mr. Trump appears to have lost more money than nearly any other individual American taxpayer,”the Times wrote.

You wouldn’t have known any of that from a December 1987 People magazine cover that featured the 41-year-old tuxedoed “tycoon” under a headline pronouncing him “TOO DARN RICH.”

“Almost everything he touches turns to profit,” the magazine marveled, adding: “He says he’s too busy to run for President right now, but in a few years, well, who knows?”

“He is the man with the Midas fist,” Newsweek wrote

The Times wrote He dates slinky fashion models, belongs to the most elegant clubs and, at only 30 years of age, estimates that he is worth ‘more than $200 million.’ ”

Evidence suggests that figure was preposterous. As my colleagues Michael Kranish and Marc Fisher noted in their book “Trump Revealed,” Trump reported a mere $24,594 in income to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement that year and said he owed $10,832 in taxes.

Trump each year browbeat Forbes to include him on its annual list of the world’s richest people — which it obliged him by doing, beginning in 1985 — and then howled that it had underestimated his supposedly vast wealth.

His backup singers at “Fox & Friends” chimed in, noting that piling up 10 digits’ worth of losses was a testament to Trump’s financial genius. “If anything, you read this and you’re like ‘Wow, it’s pretty impressive, all the things that he’s done in his life,’ ” co-host Ainsley Earhardt said in wonder. “It’s beyond what most of us could ever achieve.”

During the final debate of the 2016 campaign, Trump vowed to “run our country the way I’ve run my company.” As we are learning, that is one campaign promise he’s on track to keep.

this is much like the Forbes article linked in another thread. It showed the value of his properties as proof of Trump's billionaire status ($3 billion). But the article didn't discuss the details of bank loans and investment groups. How much is financed? There most certainly would be investment groups for some of those assets (perhaps all) - especially the country clubs. What percentage do other investors comprise?

For a guy who won't release any of his financials, the MSM was certainly "all-in" for supporting the "Trump, a great businessman" hype.

No, actually, it was in reference to your typical banter........infinity.

But seriously, if you want to believe Trump's a billionaire "because he says so"....then that's your absolute right. It's the great thing about this country and our freedoms.

However, let's not put down those who might require a little better reference/proof of that billionaire status.

Damn man. My "typical banter" was simply repeating your assertion, and as usual, you can't defend it or speak informatively about it. So I will ask you again.

How does a "non-billionaire" use a $$billion tax benefit? I'm ready for you to explain.

Are there tax credits for those who have over $1 Billion in personal wealth? I gave it a short search - I didn't see any reference to Trump taking a "billionaire tax benefit". Now, I see over a 10-year period, Trump claimed $1 billion in losses - which he says, and I believe it's, in part, true that much was due to depreciation. But to have airlines and casinos go belly-up during that time, the original cash outlay to get the business going would be gone.

Not saying the billionaire tax benefit doesn't exist....my search simply didn't produce a result - I saw some references to millionaires.

Perhaps you can provide what no other media outlet has yet to confirm, is Donald Trump a billionaire?

Good grief, you are a moron. The “loss” was discussed and explained in Marine’s thread. There simply is no way to claim a $billion tax right off of you don’t have a $billion in assets.

Most understand Forbes media is the gold standard in estimating individuals net worth. They say he’s worth $3B. I’ll take their word over your ignorant guessing. You should prove otherwise.

IT'S VERY SAD HOW STUPID, GULLIBLE AND READY TO BELIEVE ANYTHING
CONSERVATIVES ARE. THE MAN HAS OVER 10,000 DOCUMENTED LIES IN 2 YEARS, HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE A FRAUD AND A HUCKSTER OVER AND OVER AGAIN - AND EVEN AFTER DAY AFTER DAY, WEEK
AFTER WEEK, OF BEING CAUGHT LYING TO YOU - YOU STILL BELIEVE WHAT HE SAYS -YOU PEOPLE ARE PATHETIC.

FORBES REPORTER SAYS TRUMP LIED, BROW BEAT, AND PRETENDED TO BE SOMEONE ELSE TO GET ON FORTUNE 400 LIST

A former Forbes reporter says that President Donald Trump lied to him in order to make the Forbes 400 list of the wealthiest Americans, including impersonating an aide who didn’t exist to claim wealth he didn’t have.

An audiotape of the reporter’s alleged 1984 conversation with Trump was published in The Washington Post Friday. in which Trump is said to have disguised his voice.

While working on the Forbes 400 in May 1984, the reporter says that Trump contacted him claiming to be an aide named John Barron. In 2016, The Washington Post revealed that Barron was actually Trump himself and that he often used the name to pretend to be his own spokesperson.

During the call, Trump as Barron said that he had taken control of the business he ran with his father, and should be credited with owning those assets as well, which would make him a billionaire. Under a previous editor of the Forbes 400 list, the magazine had valued Trump’s assets at $200 million, only a fifth of what he claimed to own in interviews.

AND NOTE THATS $200 MILLION IN ASSETS NOT NET WORTH!!!!!!!!!!
IF YOU HAVE $200 MILLION IN ASSETS AND OWE $1 BILLION AND
CANT SERVICE THE DEBT YOU ARE NOT FABULOUSLY WEALTHY

YOU ARE BROKE.AND LIVING OFF YOUR DAD WHILE CLAIMING TO
BE A BUSINESS GENIUS WHEN ACTUALLY ALL YOU ARE IS A FRAUD.

The loss was over a 10-year period.....he didn't take that loss in one shot. Plus, as discussed in Marine's thread a lot of that loss was a paper loss for depreciation.

Besides, those articles were discussing his wealth 20+ years ago.....

I'm a firm believer in our American freedoms. If you choose to believe Trump, that's your prerogative. And, if you believe Trump owns all that real estate and country clubs with no bank loans or financial investors... then go for it.

THE LOSES ARE NOT AS A RESULT OF DEPRECIATION AS THE TIMES INVESTIGATORS HAVE STATED
EVERY TIME THEY WERE ASKED - THESE ARE ACTUAL $$$ LOSES BECAUSE OF BAD DECISIONS.

The tax code allows owners of commercial property to write down the cost of their buildings — a valuable tax shelter known as depreciation. In “The Art of the Deal,” Mr. Trump cited one of his Atlantic City casinos to show how it works. Built for $400 million and depreciated at a rate of 4 percent a year, he said, it could allow him to shelter $16 million in taxable income annually. But Mr. Trump’s example, meant to demonstrate the magic of depreciation, shows something else: Depreciation alone cannot account for the hundreds of millions of dollars in losses he declared on his taxes.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/07/us/trump-tax-figures.html

LIARS FIGURE BUT FIGURES DO NOT LIE!!! THE MAN IS THE WORLDS BIGGEST LOSER.
EVEN WORSE HE RUNS THE COUNTRY LIKE HE RAN HIS BUSINESS - INTO DEBT AND INTO THE GROUND.

Give it up Raleigh, Chevy is stupid and doesn’t know it. I think deep down Greed and Dtard know they are stupid

VOX??? You keep proving you’re a know nothing idiot.

You don’t understand depreciation do you??? Depreciation is a non cash expense on a profit and loss statement. It’s an EXPENSE in the year of operation. ITS AN EXPENSE ON THE BUSINESS assets that works to reduce the net income of the business. It helps to reduce taxable income and may or may not create a “loss”. It’s not just a “paper” loss. It’s “loss” in the eyes of the IRS.

In Trumps case, the “loss” had to be spread over 10 years. The IRS limits the amount of “loss” one can take in a single year. In other words...a $$billion can’t be claimed in a single year, regardless if the loss occurred in a single year and thus must be spread out over time based on IRS requirements.

And the Forbes articles discussing Trumps wealth CURRENTLY state his wealth NOW is 3 Bil. I don’t need to believe Trump. I choose to believe Forbes who have been doing this far longer and more successfully than your financial analytical “career” you’re pretending to have here.

Again using your logic.... We see far more proof that Trump is a billionaire than you not being a child predator. So I’ll go with Forbes on their opinion and question the lack of evidence proving you aren’t allowed to be near school zones.

Judge Roy Bean dies
Roy Bean, the self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos,” dies in Langtry, Texas.

A saloonkeeper and adventurer, Bean’s claim to fame rested on the often humorous and sometimes-bizarre rulings he meted out as a justice of the peace in western Texas during the late 19th century. By then, Bean was in his 50s and had already lived a life full of rough adventures.

Born in Kentucky some time during the 1820s, Bean began getting into trouble at an early age. He left home in 1847 with his brother Sam and lived a rogue’s life in Mexico until he shot a man in a barroom fight and had to flee. He next turned up in San Diego, where he enjoyed playing the dashing caballero. Again he shot a man during a quarrel and was forced to leave town quickly. He fell into the same old habits in Los Angeles, eventually killing a Mexican officer in a duel over a woman. Angry friends of the officer hanged Bean in revenge, but luckily, the rope stretched and Bean managed to stay alive until the woman he had fought for arrived to cut him down. Bearing rope scars on his neck that remained throughout his life, Bean left California to take up a less risky life in New Mexico and Texas.

For about 16 years, Bean lived a prosperous and relatively legitimate life as a San Antonio businessman. In 1882, he moved to southwest Texas, where he built his famous saloon, the Jersey Lilly, and founded the hamlet of Langtry. Saloon and town alike were named for the famous English actress, Lillie Langtry. Bean had never met Langtry, but he had developed an abiding affection for the beautiful actress after seeing a drawing of her in an illustrated magazine. For the rest of his life, he avidly followed Langtry’s career in theatre magazines.

Before founding Langtry, Bean had also secured an appointment as a justice of the peace and notary public. He knew little about the law or proper court procedures, but residents appreciated and largely accepted his common sense verdicts in the sparsely populated country of West Texas.

Bean was often deliberately humorous or bizarre in his rulings, once fining a dead man $40 for carrying a concealed weapon. He threatened one lawyer with hanging for using profane language when the hapless man referred to the “habeas corpus” of his client. Less amusing was Bean’s decision to free a man accused of killing a Chinese rail worker on the grounds that Bean knew of no law making it a crime “to kill a Chinaman.”

By the 1890s, reports of Bean’s curmudgeonly rulings had made him nationally famous. Travelers on the train passing through Langtry often made a point of stopping to visit the ramshackle saloon, where a sign proudly proclaimed Bean to be the “Law West of the Pecos.”

Bean fell ill during a visit to San Antonio. He returned to Langtry, where he died on March 16, 1903. Lillie Langtry, the object of Bean’s devoted adoration, visited the village named in her honor only 10 months after Bean died.

CROOKED CASTS HIMSELF AS STAR OF NATIONAL 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION
President Trump has effectively taken charge of the nation’s premier Fourth of July celebration in Washington, and making tentative plans to address the nation from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, according to top administration officials.

The president’s starring role has the potential to turn what has long been a nonpartisan celebration of the nation’s founding into another version of a Trump campaign rally. Officials said it is unclear how much the changes may cost, but the plans have already raised alarms among city officials and some lawmakers about the potential impact of such major alterations to a time-honored and well-organized summer tradition.

Fireworks on the Mall, which the National Park Service has orchestrated for more than half a century, draw hundreds of thousands of Americans annually and mark one of the highlights of the city’s tourist season. The event has been broadcast live on television since 1947 and since 1981 has been accompanied by a free concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol featuring high-profile musicians and a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra.

The revised Independence Day celebration is the culmination of two years of attempts by Trump to create a major patriotic event centered on him,...
including failed efforts to mount a military parade modeled on the Bastille Day celebration in France. The new event has become a top priority for new Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, whom Trump tasked with the job three months ago, officials said.

One could point out, as Schiff did, that the Obama administration first “made dozens of witnesses available to the Congress [and] provided numerous thousands of documents” before asserting “specific claims of privilege,” whereas the Trump White House has delivered a “blanket no.” One could also point out that the administration is asserting executive privilege over things from before his presidency — i.e., before he was even the executive — and you can’t assert a privilege that doesn’t exist. The Trump White House’s action is far broader in scope, so while some may disagree about where Schiff draws the line on appropriate use of executive power, that doesn’t make him a hypocrite.

Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) is a hypocrite, says Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.). , Schiff supported the Obama administration’s assertion of executive privilege during congressional investigations into the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Operation Fast and Furious. Therefore: “He’s a hypocrite,” said Paul. “…He was all for President Obama using executive privilege and now he’s against this president [using it].”

Rand Paul’s ‘principles’

ByJames Downie
Opinions editor
May 12 at 5:55 PM

You’d think a declared constitutional originalist such as Paul would abhor executive privilege, a concept whose roots go back only toWatergate, and support Congress’s oversight power, so crucial to the system of checks and balances.

In the same way that some words have silent vowels or consonants, Paul’s principles have silent caveats. “The president can’t just do what he wants,”except on the minor issue of whether he can stonewall congressional oversight. To “bypass Congress” is to “act like a monarch,”unless Congress, a political body, is motivated by politics. And then there’s the most important caveat: The president “has to really get approval from Congress”unless the president is more popular with Republicans than I am.Whether the fact that Paul now“considers the president a personal friend”is an additional “caveat,” one cannot say for certain.

So — with possible apologies to Groucho Marx — yes, Rand Paul has principles. And when GOP voters don’t like them, he has others.

But let’s set that aside for the moment and assume the senator is correct. By contrast, Paul is a man of principle. Don’t take it from me: As Paul himself wrote when voting against an emergency declaration to build Trump’s border wall, “the only way to be an honest officeholder is to stand up for the same principles no matter who is in power.”

But wait, asked “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos, if Schiff is a hypocrite, doesn’t that make Paul a hypocrite as well? He played several clips of Paul criticizing Barack Obama’s use of executive power.

“Someone who wants to bypass the Constitution, bypass Congress, that’s someone who wants to act like a monarch.”

“The president acts like he’s a king.”

“Not only is it an abuse of power, I think it’s almost leads us to a constitutional crisis of sorts. ... The president can’t just do what he wants, he’s not a king, he has to really get approval from Congress.”

“These are perfectly legitimate oversight functions,” Campbell said. “No system works — even one as brilliantly constructed as the United States Constitution — works without good faith. . . . When good faith falls apart, the ability for the Constitution to work is compromised.”

Kerry W. Kircher, who served as House counsel for the last GOP majority, said the standoff marks “a complete breakdown and complete obstruction of Congress’s role.” “If the court signs off on this stuff, then we’ll have an imperial presidency,” Kircher said, adding: “We’ll have a presidency that will be largely unchecked.”

The president is blocking aides from testifying, refusing entire document requests from some committees, filing lawsuits against corporations to bar them from responding to subpoenas and asserting executive privilege to keep information about the special counsel’s Russia investigation from public view.

Meanwhile, Democrats are also examining dozens of actions involving administration policies rather than Trump himself. The Energy and Commerce Committee, for instance, has sent out more than 30 oversight requests to agencies that are responsible for health, environment and consumer protection issues, with varying levels of response.

In the past week alone, Trump and the White House blocked three major inquiries — rebuffing requests for his tax returns, refusing to turn over an unredacted version of Mueller’s final report on Russian interference and barring former White House counsel Donald McGahn from responding to a Hill subpoena.

The law says the treasury secretary “shall furnish” tax returns to Congress upon request. But Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday declined a request under the law from House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-Mass.)

The same day, Trump officials barred McGahn from turning over subpoenaed information related to Mueller’s investigation, potentially opening him up to legal peril and a contempt of Congress charge. McGahn was a central witness in several of 10 instances of potential obstruction of justice identified in theMueller report.

Former House counsels of both political parties question the logic of the lawsuit. Trump’s lawyers cite a court precedent from 1880 that ...was overturned in the 1920s and has not been followed in nearly 100 years.

Trump’s lawyers are also suing Deutsche Bank, a Trump lender, and Capital One, his private bank, to stop them from cooperating with the House Financial Services and Intelligence committees on a probe involving alleged Russian money laundering.

Trump is also defending himself against plaintiffs in two lawsuits alleging that his company violates the Constitution by doing business with foreign governments. The Constitution bars any government official from receiving foreign payments known as “emoluments” while in office.

The White House has also refused to provide documents demanded by the House Oversight Committee involving its security clearance process. In April, the White House instructed former personnel security director Carl Kline not to appear for a subpoenaed deposition

The administration has resisted providing several pieces of information involving ... the treatment of children in federal custody
