As we speak, Marshall is considering backing out of the bowl game. The decision may already be made.

Not playing in this bowl game will be one of the biggest public relations mistakes in University history.

We have justification for playing and getting beat but if we skip out, half the nation will question why and wonder what’s wrong at Marshall University. The sympathy we get and those questioning the portal process will pale in comparison to the storyline around not renewing Huff and all our players transferring.

The injury excuse is a poor one. Our backups play against our starters day in and day out. They are conditioned and ready.

Playing shows heart and the media will key in on that. Not playing ultimately sets us up to look like quitters.

So run down a list of available players by position for me since you know playing is the right move. How deep do we go before we have to play a TE at left guard, for example? How about a walk-on freshman LB having to navigate the cut blocks of senior OL for Army? If one gets his knees shredded is that just the price to pay for your honor?

Why don’t you let the people with actual information make the decision? We know from just announced portal entries we have around 50 scholarship players. Many are freshmen that have been redshirting. So, at best, we have a roster smaller than an NFL roster that is almost empty at some position groups.

It sucks, but you can’t let vanity rule the decision process over player safety.

I am ready to suit up.

Good thing Coach Gibson likes the 3-3-5 defense because we probably only have 3 defensive lineman left.

I guess the Gardner Webbs of the world should stop playing the Alabamas.

You just watch how half the media spins this then let's talk about vanity.

Rumors are that Huff started encouraging the players to transfer out after the JMU game and some of Huff's holdover assistant coaches are currently encouraging players to leave Marshall. If this is true, Huff's assistants should be banned from the campus.

Apparently a higher number of players have left the campus than has been reported.

The latest is that the football program is down to 41 available players and only 3 offensive linemen.

If that’s the case I agree with the decision to not play. You can’t play with 3 available offensive lineman. Even if we had 5 it’s not enough. We would have to have reserves to give some guys a break. As much as we all want to watch us play and give some younger guys a chance it looks like we really just don’t have the numbers.

If that’s the case, then I believe the university needs to share that with the fans. Otherwise, they are doing them a big disservice, especially all of those who have invested their money in paying for this trip.

THIS. If Huff was actively encouraging players to leave, and the staff still here have been doing that, then sunlight on the issue is needed immediately. It’s staggering to believe coaches, who these young men and their families trusted, would actively try to hurt an athletic department and their fans. It all seems so completely malicious and like something I’d do on the playground in fourth grade. Am I overreacting here? I get the current college football landscape is what it is…but to play fast and loose with the future of so many young men is staggering. If this is true, one of the worst things we ever did was let Huff anywhere near campus.

It sucks. However, this is more of a result of the NCAA not having a better transfer portal setup to help the schools.

They need to push it back after the season.

This was always going to happen. It sucks it happened with Marshall

What makes this whole portal mess even worse is that I’m watching the Army-Navy game, and I believe with our entire team intact, we could have been competitive in the bowl.

Poppycock. They use to play eith smaller rosters. Guys used to play bother ways. Run the same 4 or 5 plays if yoy have to. We would be playing Army not Georgia. They run about 10 plays.

18 to 22 year old can't play one game without 100 guys? Earl Campbell use to run the all 35 times a game.

This is one game with a couple weeks rest.

Go get some vagasil and pass it out.

"Bowl games don't matter...meaningless, a waste of time, money, and don't do anything for us."

-Fans during the Doc years and Huff years

You fools made this bed. Now sleep in it.

Did you say you wouldn't do a hobbyist sport because you worry about getting injured, remember?

This shit isn't on the fans at all so you can take that crap elsewhere.

Actually it is. Just accept it. You all complained for YEARS how meaningless the bowl games are...yet you got mad when players opted out of them, if MU won or lost, and whoever the opponent was.

This Bowl game opt out will come out at every game next year. Marshall couldn't field at team for the bowl game last year because Huff went to Southern Mississippi and the players opt out or left Marshall and there still feeling the effects of that. Or Marshall had to opt out of there bowl game and are now rolling with there new coach in place. Ether way Marshall takes a hit every game next year.

I sincerely hope this isn’t true. If it is, even if Huff wins every game he coaches from now on, he will still be a loser.

51 players have entered the portal…are gone.

This is what a reset looks like. What did people actually think would happen when we had 40 come in last year?

They really think MU both is the greatest place for anyone and they should kiss the ground said fans walk on for having gone there...
...and the poorest underachieving program in America.

They should.
In fact, Saban starting the SEC's trend of scheduling usually a weak FCS or lower G5 program the 8-10th week of the season the game before an iportant conference opponent should be ridiculed by every talking head.

Yeah, the stupid FCS argument.

Last I checked when Gardner Webb plays Alabama they have 65 scholarship players that have been assembled to have multiple players at each position. Things like at least 8 offensive linemen, 2-3 QBs, 6 CBsw, 9 LBers, 8 DL, etc.

Additionally, in the case of extreme emergencies, they have 20 more or less walk on players in case 4-5 players at a position are out.

How do you even prepare for a game when you don’t have enough players to form a scout team? Do you make your offense run the option so your defense can practice against it? If so, when does your offense get to practice their game plan?

So what you are saying is we should never play a bowl game again unless it’s the playoffs. Last year we lost a ton of players. Our starting qb didn’t play in our bowl and the one who did play got like 10 snaps this season. Our HB played 1 half and we got boat raced in the second half. I was there it was embarrassing. That was UTSA not a ranked Army team.
The majority of kids who left Marshall this year would have left if huff had come back or not. It’s the reality of college football today. Some left to go to a P4 and others left for their own reason. I still haven’t seen that many signing with Southern Miss.
Huffs apparently a dck but it is what it is, he came in here and won a Sunbelt championship in 4 years. He won said championship in an away game. Then whether through his arrogance or the bumbling of the athletic department he didn’t get a contract extension. He leaves and he tries to talk his players into coming with him.

FFS I don’t know how many threads I’ve seen where our fans are like man I hope Coach Gibson can bring lots of NC State players with him. What’s the difference? Do you think NC state did anything to those players except kiss their ass and give them everything they want? Of course they did but maybe there are players that want to follow their coach which is usually the biggest reason a player goes somewhere.

If it was at all possible we should have played the game. We are already getting crushed nationally whether fair or not about us not signing our conference winning coach. Now it will be Marshall robbed a service academy having a great year from playing a conference champion. But the decision has been made so be it.

It is what it is. I plan to watch the soccer team on Monday then I’m going to forget about college sports for about eight months. By that time, maybe I’ll have a more positive outlook.
