Lol I love this.

I love soccer. I love women's soccer. I watch hours of soccer every week. To be honest, the USWNT puts out an overall better product than the men's team does. That being said, this deal will end up bankrupting U.S. Soccer. Why? Because people turn out in higher numbers and pay more to watch men play sports. Regardless of how you feel or think, that is an indisputable fact. You can't pay women the same amount of money if they aren't putting asses in seats or ratings on TV.

Bingo. You can’t arbitrarily pay somebody something in the name of fairness. Have these people not learned anything? Socialism never works.

Not really. We have more young talent on the USMNT roster than ever before. Guys like Pulisic, Reyna, McKennie and West play meaningful minutes for some of the top clubs in Europe. The present is solid but the future of the team is very, very bright.
Where did some of the Marshall men from the championship team end up?

Pulisic has been solid, but even with all the talent, they just can't seem to get it done. Disappointing considering the support they receive compared to the women.

While there are some top players on the USMNT the team itself has no depth. It's like a lot of mid-level soccer nations. Also our coaching set up is atrocious and hasn't improved since I played ODP in the mid 90's.

From what I always understood, and Google bears this out, the women's national team is actually more popular than the men, has higher TV ratings, and produces more revenue. Ratings 22% higher, $20m more in revenue. Yes this is very different from any other sport.

At first I didn't bother to look this up, and I assumed men's pro soccer, the MLS, is more popular than women's league. Nope. Women's ratings are surging past the men. So soccer is apparently the outlier. I'm not sure about attendance as I only looked at the TV ratings, but this is still VERY different from basketball, golf, etc.

Important part, "USSF also says the men’s team generates more revenue. The women’s team generated $101.3m over the course of 238 games between 2009 and 2019 while the men generated $185.7m over 191 games, according to the federation."

That's a wider spread of years that does not reflect the current situation. Apparently shit got weird after the women won the World Cup in 2015

In 2016, women’s games generated $1.9 million more in revenue than men’s games. From 2016 to 2018, women’s games generated approximately $50.8 million in revenue, compared with $49.9 million for men’s games.

I cannot find numbers the past couple years, but given the women were World Cup winners again in 2019 I would wager the numbers are similar.

Perhaps we should not be surprised. The women win, bigger payouts and rising TV revenues. Youth soccer has had HUGE gains with girls, lots of new fans with parents who become fans.

I will note my post should have said $2m...I must have brushed the 0 below the 2 on the number pad.

The women approved their previous pay scale so they didn’t have a leg to stand. It’s not the mend vault the women approved what they did and got paid less

Played ODP myself in the early 90s out in Omaha.

I think our depth has improved with this recent group of players but I’m not a Berhalter fan. Agree with you there.
