He will be ok. Danny knows he has to grow into his game and he is prepared to give him the time he needs. He has lost nearly 50 pounds and hopes to loose another 20 or so.
He played pretty good defense on Mayo in his second half minutes.

2 quick fouls had him on the bench for almost the whole first half. Lots of fouls called in the game so he was guilty of quick whistles.

He did a nice job defending their best player in the 2nd half but there is work to do on offense.

Work in process but I don’t think the first game was a good sample.

He’s fat and out of shape what is there to describe
Completely uncalled for.
We are an interesting group of "fans". We initially get excited about a program/player, then once the games begin we start picking the student athletes apart! I am so glad we have DD as the HC. One of the things I am concerned about this season is the expectations (me included) are so sky high, the bar for results has gone from, say, 11ft in the pole vault up to 16 ft from one round to the next.
It's going to require a ton of effort for the basketball team to not only try & live up to the new expectations, while at the same time insulating themselves from the slings & arrows we fans seem unable to resist throwing. If anybody can keep their heads on straight, it is Coach Dan.

For the reason above I thought long and hard about setting up a profile on here and other message boards. I though about staying anonymous and not letting anyone know my connection to Jannson. Some of you might not speak your mind and sugar coat some things so as not to hurt my feelings. Then i realized that we ALL are ten feet tall and bulletproof behind our keyboards and we say what we want. Sometimes despite someone feelings. For the record, i'm just as guilty as anyone else. Our family will take the criticisms both positive and negative. I know Jannson's heart and motor. He's going to give this university his best effort, every time, even if it doesn't live up to everyone's expectations. I will tell you this. None of you will be as hard on him as he will be on himself. All that being said, critique our boys all you want, but need to try to be constructive with it. Just my opinion and i will get off my soapbox now.

Yes, that comment about weight was very uncalled for. Herdinatl, I have nothing, but good things to say about Jannson since he began at Marshall. He has been a positive role model for the team and university both on and off the court. He will go far in whatever he decides to do in life.

He was huffing and puffing; not a pretty site actually. Looks like he has a great desire and may be committed, but participation of fast break basketball won't come his way for some time IMHO.

w: I don't think it is Dan's intention for him to be a gazelle! As mentioned earlier, if Iran (how is his name pronounced phonetically?) can give us 10-15 minutes of low post help & defending their post like he did Mayo on Thursday night, he will be a big plus for the Herd. He may not get there ahead of the other 4, but if we are in a half-court set, I think we have plenty enough talent to get him the ball as needed. I am very encouraged by what I saw. Not sold on the alley-oops to him yet though. Pick and roll, he should be devastating!

I admire your moxie. I avoided this type of fan interaction when my son was playing ball, starting in high school. The insults and jealousy were more than I could stomach.

Thanks. I just look at it like this...I know he's talented. I've already had to shew away agents trying to get there greedy hooks into him / us. Is he the next larry bird?....no. Will he play professional ball in some aspect ?.......he certainly has that potential. I do know that he will get his masters from Marshall and be a success at whatever he chooses to do and we'll support whatever that might be. That being said, while Jannson is going to school and playing ball for Marshall, you're going to get all he has. His best effort is all his mother and I will ask of him.....and the rest of the kids, lol. Now, Whether that is good enough or not is all relative and up to you. As disheartening as it may be to read the negative comments, the only opinions that really matter to us are his and his coaches.

I can never understand why is it that some fans don't seem to understand that these young men playing sports for Marshall are just that....young men. 18-23 year olds giving their best for the university we love. We have a coach who I think is doing the best he can to mold these young men to the best people and basketball players they can be. Unless it is obvious that something else is happening, I will support these young men.

Herdinatl....many of us have had children participate in sports at some level and understand how much they put into getting better and doing the best they can for their respective teams. I hope your son's experience at Marshall is a good one and helps him become a better member of society when he leaves Marshall.

I hope we can get two wins this weekend on the court and on the field. GO HERD!

Was anything I said untrue? Absolutely not. I never once questioned his work ethic or his desire. I didn’t call him lazy. He is overweight and out of shape period. Can he fix that? Absolutely. Can he contribute? Absolutely but that doesn’t make what I said any less truthful.

So, is it Eyerun, emphasis on 1st syllable? Ehhrahn like the country ( soft a, emphasis on 2nd syllable) Eyeran (emph on 2nd syl) .....

Don't think anyone is doubting your truthfulness! Hurtful? For sure!! Iran was recruited to play for our Herd and he is a son of Marshall. Your comment, if read by Iran, a team member or family could certainly be hurtful. Don't think you would use this kind of description for one of your own family. The young man has done a remarkable job of losing 50 lbs. in a very short period of time. Your comments need to be supportive and encouraging. I'm sure he is getting that from his team mates, coaches and family members. As fans, we should do the same.

We have a core of rabid b’ball fans who have hyped the kid and this team so much that any sign of difficulty will be cause for alarm.
We’ve heard about Bennett being the next coming from a few for a few years. His weight was brought up as a concern but those B’ball groupies assured us he could play at 330.

He will get better, hopefully. We’ll certainly need him to play very well, not so much this year but certainly next.

I am excited for b’ball and haven’t seen this much excitement since Hucks days.

Iran's problem right now is not his weight. He has lost 50 pounds in 6 months. His problem is that he is not in good cardiovascular shape. This was in part due to his stress fracture and the fact that he hasn't played competitively for almost 2 years. His weight slows him down but does not affect his cardiovascular conditioning. He does have a tendency to be a little lazy in practice and in my opinion the coaches need to push him a little harder . He does respond when they do push him but I think Danny expects him to push himself. Hopefully he will realize the effort it takes. He is a great young man and a real pleasure to be around just like every other kid on this team.

Don’t give me he’s lost 50 pounds in a short period of time. He’s been here for two years and has had ample time to cut weight. He’s known for a long time that he needed to lose weight but somehow he just decided to get serious about it recently?!? I hope he does so he can be a legit contributor instead of just stealing a few minutes every game but I’m not going to hype him up as the next great thing/missing piece to the puzzle until he can get in shape.

I will give you that he has lost 50 pounds in 6 months because he was misinformed about wt loss for the first 8 months that he was here. Like most people that try to lose weight, he was initially following a low fat diet and this actually promotes wt gain and NOT wt loss. Since he has correctly been following a carbohydrate restricted diet for the last 6 months he has shown tremendous success.

We have freaking dietetics department and the Basketball program couldn’t get him on the right diet? Or wasn’t monitoring his progress? Bull crap

To think that any freshman is the finished product is ludicrous. Look back at the improvements that some of our recent players have made from freshman to senior seasons. I’m certainly glad that Danny is doing the evaluations for our team rather than those of us posting on here.

Herdfan429 obviously has an axe to grind and no one will be able to change his Tune. Sounds like some of our leaders that are unable to process new information for a more reasoned response. Thanks for your response to his comment. I wanted to say something similar but apparently folks are not permitted, in his world, to have bad information influence them. We should be as perfect.

I have no axe to grind. I’m merely stating what I have observed. Kudos to him for losing weight he has a long way to go. If you can’t understand that then that’s on you. I don’t sugar coat things. If you need a safe space to deal then I’m sure we can find you a coloring book and crayons somewhere

  • if this is how you want to known! So be it! When I see that Iran is working hard to improve his health and ability, I will cheer him on and not berate him. I think you would want the same for you and your loved ones! This is not child's play! It requires patience and the belief that, when provided an environment of trust, accountability, and encouragement, development will occur.
  • I am glad that we have D'Antoni as our coach. He is a firm believer in developing players and more importantly good team mates and citizens.

I find it amusing that people equate being an ass with not “sugar coat(ing) things.” You can always count on the message board self proclaimed “realists” who envisions themselves the shining light of truth among a board of green glasses wearing snowflakes who are in desperate need of a dose of reality. Well...it’s either that or someone who confuses rude and uncalled for comments with keeping it real.

Oh no. Someone on a message board said something negative about a player. Whatever shall we do?

Not saying I agree with the comment, but let's be realistic. When someone plays college ball, they are in the public eye. People are going to say negative things about them. Hell, if you find that offensive, please don't ever get on an SEC message board, you'd likely sh*t yourself. Again, I'm not saying I agree with the comments, but this is a reality in today's world of college sports. Some of the same people b*tching about 429's comments will be throwing Green or Thompson under a bus the next time one of them throws a pick or takes a sack. If you're offended, you probably need to stick to watching the games and stay off the interwebs.

Let’s see...you don’t agree with the comment. A few people call him out. What’s your point even? Not a single person said that college players can’t be subject to criticism. Not one. What has happened is that people are exercising the exact same right that you are defending by criticizing the person who said it. If someone can call a young man fat on a message board, they can be called an ass for doing it. So let’s not get all snowflakey and melt when someone turned the criticism around.

Sugarcoating is exactly what has been happening. Ever since this summer it’s been nonstop he’s doing great cutting weight he’s going to dominate etc etc. here we are 3-5 month later and he’s still out of shape and overweight. I’m sorry I can’t get excited for a kid that has been hyped for a while but at best will give us 8-10 min a night. That doesn’t mean I don’t root for the kid, cheer for his successes and want him to be great.
