Also Craig was already a more “sensitive modern” Bond and it worked. If they are going to keep the series serious and grimdark like all big budget films feel like they need to be now then that’s pretty much how they’ll need to go.
I don’t think we’ll ever see a return of the super campy stuff from the older movies. Movies have kind of moved past that anyway, but also I think Austin Powers skewering the genre so well kind of painted them into a corner.

Tough question, but I would say someone who gives up as soon as things get difficult is soft. Someone who doesn’t follow through on their commitments. Someone who is overly concerned with others’ opinion of them. Someone who can’t handle themselves when things get tough and just falls to pieces. Someone who constantly pushes others down because it’s the only way they can feel better than somebody.
You can believe me or not but that’s not directed at anybody in particular or written to make any point, it’s what I would actually consider to be soft.

We had a squirrel problem in our neighborhood and still do. So, they won't let me shoot them(city limits) and then the bleeding heart animal lovers think they are cute. They are not cute when they get in your attic or chew your gutters and such. Destructive little bastards. I got me a high powered spring loaded pellet gun with a scope on it. But, still that thing is almost like firing a 22. Houses too close. Plus if someone spots me with it they will freak and call the SWAT team on me. My old neighbor, Carlos, use to catch them in a trap and then would take them out to the game lands and release them. Those bastards get pissed off when caged. We got one in the trap one time and he called me to help. That thing was damn near rabid or something.
Anyway, i have helped solve a lot of the problem. I started to feed some cats that go through the neighborhood. One old male cat will **** a squirrel up. Rabbits are just collateral damage. Maybe a bird here and there and some field mice. He had a dead squirrel in his mouth and went right down the street with it one morning and brough it to me.
My tree hugger neighbor hates the cats. She told me the European Anglo Saxons introduced the cats and they are bad for the ecosystem. I don't care. Squirrels were jumping on my roof and eating my gutter guards up and stuff. Plus, I just paid 12 grand for a new roof this year.
The last one I watched was Casino Royale is 2006. I feel bad for the people that sat in the same seats as the two girls I watched it with because they really enjoyed the scene with Daniel Craig walking on the beach.
I would think some of the things that you listed would fall under character - how someone responds to commitments is more an issue of responsibility rather than hardness or softness to me. Likewise criticizing others would be a character flaw in the form of bullying. When confronted however many bullies often show that they are indeed soft.
I think the major contributing factors to the softening of society are economic prosperity and modern conveniences.
Years ago I went on my first mission to the mountains of Honduras. You've got to be tough to survive there without the benefits of disposable income and modern conveniences. This sank in when I got back to the Houston Airport and three ladies with manicured nails, lots of bling, latest IPhones couldn't handle the inconvenience of a 30 minute delay...
People in general no longer cut their grass, change their oil, raise a garden. With disposable income and modern conveniences there is no real need to. This causes softness.
Urban areas are generally more affluent with a wider range of conveniences and luxuries. This causes even more softness. When I see young men in urban areas I see a softness that I don't see in more rural areas.
An analogy is a pig living on a farm gets domesticated and soft, i.e. fat and lazy. When that same pig gets loose and goes into the wild it turns mean and lean, growing tusks, long hair and becoming more aggressive. I think there are parallels with humans, especially with young males.
Getting an abortion is an example of a modern convenience that is a driving factor behind the softening of people and their quit making sacrifices.
