This QB "Battle" is the oddest thing I can remember

Since we are talking hypotheticals here what about this scenario:
The coaches have seen all they need to see from Alex to name him the starter in week one so, while they still had open practices, they let Green take the majority of snaps with the 1’s. After all, new QB in a new system who has the grasp of everything....why show any outsiders what he can do and allow them to prepare? He now has 2 weeks of closed practices to go with the 1’s and they have given Green a lot of reps so if something does happen to Alex, he can step right in.
Just a hunch.
Scenario 3: We go with the Wildcat all season and put no QB on the field....lol.

Not sure when they've had time to get a good enough sample size to know what he can do. If you take Grant Traylor at his word this camp is the first time he's thrown since he got hurt. No look at how little he's actually thrown in practice. Just not sure that's a viable possibility.

Didn't read the piece, but was he talking about throwing a football period? Or throwing in practice, with pads on, against a defense? Because based on the context, what he said could be very misleading.

We all know Thomson wasn't here in the spring. We all know this would be the first time throwing in live action. But the majority of Traylor's readers probably don't know Thomson didn't participate in spring drills, so he would need to include that in his article. Both could be true.

But he did throw in the summer since his arrival in May. At least that's what we heard. Hope he can make it through the season but certainly have concerns.

Not for the entirety of camp and not as much with the 1s.

I guess my question is, if Thomson and Green are in fact neck and neck then why isn't Thomson getting equal run with the 1s?
Have you ever thought that it might be possible, just maybe, that Doc wants the "Deadhawks" wondering who our QB is going to be? Why worry so much when the starter for game 1 has likely already been determined behind closed doors. Both QBs are good, hell, even Morrell is a pretty good QB for 3rd string, so we will be fine with either of those guys going against the Deadhawks. Green is likely going to be the game 1 starter unless something drastic happens. Why should Doc have to announce it when he can keep it under wraps?

Also, no one seems to be going crazy about Saban's decision to make the game 1 starter a game time decision, and that is the preseason #1 team.

Well, for one, my guess is Alabama's QB is just a little bit different than ours. Call me crazy. Oh, and Saban, has just a smidgen more leeway with the press and fans than Doc does. I know their resumes are very comparable, but just a different scenario.

While Saban can be crusty at times, but he is a open book compared to Doc.

I keep seeing posts that talk to respect and off the field stuff as if Thomson is better than Green. Is Green this much of a problem off the field? Josh is always calling Green's character/maturity into question. Here you kind of allude to it. Several comparisons to Litton have been made. If Green is this poor of a teammate then why is he still here?

As @TwolfHerdfan has asked numerous times. If Thomson exceeds in all these categories and the staff is trying to give him time. Why then does he not get more reps with the 1s? This is what is confusing to some of us. If it truly was a 50/50 race or even 60/40 or 70/30 in favor of Thomson then why are the reps with the 1s not representative of that?

I am not trying to be argumentative. I am just trying to figure this thing out.
I don't believe Green has character flaws, he is just still young from a maturity standpoint based on comments. As for the reps question, if Thomson isn't ready to go in game 1, we will need Green to be ready, so this is a good time to get him more reps while giving Thomson time to get healthy. The coaches will probably know by the end of this week which way we will need to go, and the game 1 starter will get most of the reps during game week.

So he's soooo worried about Little Miami knowing who our QB is that he barely allows the guy he actually wants to be the starter to practice with the 1s where he can build sync and rapport with other starters. He's so worried about it he holds that QB out of over half he practices.

Game time decision and practicing is different. It would be different if both Green and Thomson were getting equal reps with the rest of the starters. You know because getting in sync with Brady and Obi isn't important.

The only logical thing is that Green IS the guy and Thomson's shoulder is worse than we know. So to disguise that Green is the starter Doc is leading on the Thomson is still in this fight. You do not hold the guy you want to run your offense out of multiple fall camp practices and when he does practice have him with the 2s and 3s.

If he hasn't been arrested or suspended it can't be that bad. He's also not been pushed down on the depth chart...so I'd like to know what some of these people's concerns truly are.

Prolly a knee jerk reaction to what we went through with Chase.

I know plenty of people with issues that haven't been arrested, and Doc isn't going to suspend someone without cause (drugs, guns, etc).

It's not real hard to realize there's some type of issue in place if you read between the lines.

Hot head?
Teammates don't like him?
Me first kind of guy?
He's a rebel, doesn't like rules?

F it. Spill the beans. Let's hear and that is why we are all here. This is big time D1 college football. They don't do this vague mamsy pamsy in the SEC. Get on with it and let's hear it. Put on the paid forum if you want to.

No use beating around the bush.

I’m just saying that you guys are all smart enough to put two and two together. You have a quarterback that took 90% of the first-team snaps in camp and yet he’s still battling for his job. Beyond that, several people have made comments that should raise concern if that’s the route we end up having to take.

Think about that for a minute.

You also said there were things you were aware of that gave you pause with Green, or perhaps I’m mistaken. If I’ve misconstrued what you said or implied I apologize. BUT if you did in fact say that my best advice to you would probably be to just keep those type of comments to yourself. It just leads to all this speculation that perhaps there are some type of character flaws and that’s not really fair to the young man either. Anyway, just my two cents.

I’ve simply adopted the same type of indirect answers that I’ve grown to deal with from coaches (both football and basketball).

Wow, so many kids brought to this program with issues, including golden boy Litton. Now all of a sudden kids are getting crapped on just because they have an attitude issue or just a bit of a wildcard? Gotta love the seemingly double standard in some cases.

How are they being crapped on?

Then, why come on a public forum and throw it out?

I didn’t “throw it out.” It was thrown out for me on here.

“Josh is always calling Green's character/maturity into question”

I generally save sensitive info for the paid board. After that, I didn’t have much of choice though.

Of course, dummy. Doc is a brilliant practitioner. That's EXACTLY what his strategy is, to fool our biggest opponent of the season in MiamiOfOhio.

The question is, will it work for the rest of the season? Will coaches beneath Doc's skill level (such as Lane Kiffin) fall for it too?

How are they being crapped on?

Green is being portrayed, or its intimated, that he is some type of rogue player when Litton bailed on his team, did several questionable things before he got here and while here yet he is the golden boy.

I’ve only said there are similarities to what COULD happen. I’ve never said that Isaiah reminds me of Chase Litton.

Would be the dumbest strategy in history. If Thomson is the starter come kickoff in Oxford I'd be shocked.

Also if Green is the starter we better ride with him instead of the some of the talk I've been hearing of bringing Thomson in later on if his shoulder is healthy. If we win less than 10 games this year and don't win this conference it will be because of how the QB position is handled and if we crap out again this season we need to completely clean house.

Here's the bottom line. You have said that the staff's apprehension to name him the QB stems from his maturity issues. So they must be pretty bad considering he keeps getting starter level reps and his nearest competitor barely practices because of a bum shoulder.

You and Chris for that matter have made comparisons to Litton. Which will make everyone jump to conclusions. These character/maturity concerns originated from mod posts not fans. They have been vague and left a lot to assumption with very little done to rectify the worry.

You have said that the staff's apprehension to name him the QB stems from his maturity issues.

For starters, I’ve never said those were the staff’s feelings. Those were my feelings and no one else’s.

You and Chris for that matter have made comparisons to Litton.

Again, I’ve only made comparisons to the situation (not for this year, but the future), not the player.

If you asked me to compare him to someone, it wouldn’t be Chase Litton.

Again, no one in the media (HN, The HD, Herd Haven, etc) is going to straight up put a kid or coach on blast regardless they deserve it or not. Do I feel as if anyone has done so? No, I don’t. I feel comfortable with what I’ve said, but I also trust Doc and Co to make the right decision therefore I don’t lose my mind over the situation.

I mean that is fine. However here is what your are missing. As a mod and writer on this board people right or wrong see you as some kind of authority on the program. You're there watching it more than we are and you have sources. So when posts are made about Green being the guy and you come back with posts tempering that person's prediction with questions of his maturity it is to be assumed you have knowledge that he is having issues. That you have heard from your sources that Doc is apprehensive to put him in because of that.

You may not think you have said all that, but some of your posts sure have and there have been several. As if you have been trying to reinforce the opinion that we should have a cautious and protected outlook on Green. I know for a fact there is a post over on OF where you said that things you have SEEN and HEARD on Green make you apprehensive to see him start.

I am also not sure what you mean with only making comparison with the situations and not the player. Once again its an accumulative effect of your previous posts. So when you say this or Chris says "The Chase Litton Experiment" then two and two are going to put together.

If your posts in regards to Green's maturity/character is purely your own conjecture based off your own experience then by all means full lay those out. Playing it all close to the vest makes it seem like you know things we don't. Which by the way when talking about Green you have said exactly that. You know things we don't and you can't go into it.

One of the number one rules is to never say, "I know something, but I can't tell you." It just kicks a hornet's nest for the sake of it.

What is going to happen is the same thing that happened with Litton. So many vague posts are going to made and speculation is going to run rampant and then it gets to the point where truth and rumor can and never will be separated. You have a responsibility to everyone on this board when you post because of the position you are in.

Chase Litton was not ready to be the QB of this program when he was given the starting position.

I get the sense the coaching staff feels the same about IG.

That's the comparison I was making with the "Chase Litton Experiment" comment.

No freshmen is ready to take the reigns of a D1 program but they do and some have success. Hell, I've seen 2-3 year starters that weren't ready for the starting job but there they were.

I sincerely hope AT is everything he's made out to be and more, but most of us have huge concerns over his ability to play the position effectively for one game, much less a 12-13 game season. I think he has been rushed back from his surgery too soon and we are seeing the effects right now. jmho.

He was definitely throwing to the WRs over the summer. He probably overworked his shoulder early in camp and just needs some rest.
