OK new turf is down. But on here a couple of months back the new AD Mr Spears indicated tearing down the south end zone bleachers and installing a party deck and also mentioned new video boards. What’s the timeline for these improvements or is this in the future?

In almost all stadiums and arenas, including ours, and it has been this way since Day One, the scoreboards are a barter situation. A company, in our case, Learfield IMG, provides the scoreboards in return for the rights to sell all the ads on them and elsewhere in the venue. At the end of the contract, we can take over the rights ourselves or trade in for a new scoreboard. We have traded in every time, and should expect to do so again.

Has the relationship with IMG been that beneficial to us? I wonder.
Well, is seems darn near everybody does it exactly the same way we do, both for scoreboards and also for media rights.

I don't think we are going to figure out some new and innovative way of doing things in Huntington WV that the boys in Columbus, Tuscaloosa, College Station, Lexington, et al, haven't.

Agree and add Rompza. All 3 were grade A jerks.

I was surprised he didn’t enter the draft after last season

Sadly, he's gonna be disappointed. This ain't Bama. If I can't go out to my car and get a brew, then screw this, I just won't go. LOL!

And we all know announcers have sports medicine backgrounds

And we had an atmosphere that was better than a middle school Jv game

Good lord, man. No we won’t.

Louisiana is good but they aren’t spectacular. Lots and lots of close wins this year over mediocre teams.

That wasn’t going on before?

Starting LB Charlie Gray now in the portal

I’d like to see Coach Huff reach out to the fraternities and sororities on campus and maybe attend one of their meetings to get them more involved. Let’s face it, the “Maniacs” are for the most part a bunch of dorks that are unorganized and honestly not a thing at Marshall. Maybe even have a “fan drive” outside of the student center a time or two.

Would you opt to not retain DD if he beat a top 25 team with a solid basketball history, got his own team into the top 25 for a few weeks, then stumbled towards the end but made the conference finals, eventually losing, but being named CUSA CoY?

Oh wait, that was Doc.

Huge difference between the two.

You don't seem to understand much in this thread.

Spears has experience, good experiences, with Learfield IMG competitors, I think he knows more than we may understand about what is possible with negotiations with rights marketers, etc. As a matter of fact, I suspect this kind of experience as what got him selected into his position.

There are other companies that do this. We don’t have to be tied at the hip to IMG.
It’s sorta like the Marshall and Sodexo contract. Sometimes it’s best to look at all options.

IMG is a very professional company that brings national experience to Marshall Athletics. They handle every aspect of the advertising, Pre and post game shows as well as on field presentations During basketball and football. If you want to use the Marshall athletics logos, you go through them. They have a office in the Shewey building and are joined at the hip with athletics as well as the big green. they do a great job for Marshall.

Glad that we have someone on board to help with branding. Like where Spears is going with this. Standing still is no longer an option.

If I may put my two cents in here. The thing that makes Marshall's media so good, isn't IMG exclusively. They are the vessel that makes it possible. And thank goodness for them, but it's the people. I LOVE listening to Steve Cotton on the radio when I can't watch a game or sometimes even in the stands, but the delay kinda makes it weird.

Plus, the post-game is always good and then there is the call-in show. I do miss Woody though. Swannie does a fantastic job.

Spears mentioned presenting a proposal to the BOG for the cost of approximately $8M for video boards at the Joan, the soccer stadium and softball stadium. I wonder if we break from the normal approach this time and if so how that would affect advertising during the game?

Video board conversation starts at 6:40…

Steve cotton is as good as the come. I live in Clemson country and I can’t stand listening to their radio guys. University of South Carolina’s are even worse

You never know. We may just get a better deal on some items going our own way. We’ll never know until we try.

I live down here too where I get all the Clemson games on radio... I totally understand painting a rosy picture of your team/program, but their guys are the worst homers I have heard in a long time. Everything Clemson does is amazing and beyond criticism, and everything the other team/coaches/fans/cheerleaders do is garbage. lol

The Red Sox tv crew and the Bengals radio guys also make my list of awful homer announcing.

I agree . But there are times I wish Steve would be more of a homer. I really wish our PA guy would be more of homer. I hear it all the time at other stadiums, how a PA can help get the crowd into the game. It makes a difference. I know we want to be professional but, this is the Marshall network and a home game at the Joan.

Agree about the PA guy... He should be looking to get people excited during the game. It's safe to assume the Marshall fans inside the stadium don't care if he's over the top for our side.

Steve is a different story, he does a nice job of being "excited" when Marshall does something well, while also not being a dick to the other team or downplaying when they do something well. Just a good solid, no frills, radio call. You can tell he's "Marshall's guy" in terms of broadcast, but he's not a d-bag about it.

We used to have Joe Toy on the mic trying to get the crowd into the game and people complained it was bush league.

Can't be any worse than Toni Caridi. That dude is a hack. At a previous job they always played eerdiot games on the radio. If I didn't know any better I'd be sure wvu was the best team in CFB and never did anything wrong.

Steve calls the game as it's happening. Not how he feels like it's happening.

Dan Hoard and Dave Lapham (the obnoxious one)? They are FANTASTIC!!!! lol
Haha... I hadn't heard a Bengal radio call in several years (since I left Huntington), but last summer a buddy got married about an hour north of Cincy and I happened to be driving home Sunday afternoon... The broadcast was so bad I was literally laughing my way back to North Carolina. The play by play guy is a homer, the color guy has the most obnoxious voice I can recall and their sideline guy (who I don't remember, but was a former Bengal player) was openly cheering for the team multiple times when they cut to him... It was worse than the local high school broadcast on our AM station, lol.

What do the radio announcers have to do with improvements invthe Joan? He is on radio - not the PA.

It was. I don't see that at other games. I don't see DJ Herd Squat either. It's about presentation and delivery. We struck out on those.
In house DJs are big in the NBA, but not college football... In the NBA they can play music during the game, so a DJ actually works inside the arenas (which are all located in urban centers where hip hop music is king).

Yep. Music is huge at NHL games as well. It can be a nice piece of the college game experience if the right tunes are played. All genres can be played and get the crowd moving. Maybe the 28 students in attendance will look up from their phones and start moving as well.

He just wasn't any good. He didn't have any energy. His audition was bad too.

the thing is Marshall doesn't have any crowd cheers. You go to the games with teams we allegedly aspire to be like and they have stuff like that. I mean Thunderstruck is supposed to be our "thing" and it's barely embraced. It should be like VT Enter Sandman entrance. We can barely get people to stand up and yell on 3rd downs.

It's all driven by the PA announcer and the band in my view. I appreciate the work and loyalty of both but we need more energy from both - big time. It doesn't hurt to be a homer.

I really hope the fan committee puts a lot of time and effort into developing a plan to get more butts in seats and making the total game experience more exciting and enjoyable for everyone.

PA Announcers, DJs, Band have to work together. Have to be coordinated. No one seems to work together at our games. They play over each other, speak over each other, play commercials over each other. They all need to have a set routine and coordinated so there is flow. I think the DJ is a cool idea. But he may have not been given direction or times when he is needed.

The whole experience in the stadium is just disjointed mess. (frankly it starts with the horrendous commercials on the big screen)

This! I remember one basketball game where the Pep Band was playing "Lets Go Herd" and right in the middle Kirtner started playing the barenaked ladies "all star" song. Biggest Fu I have seen at a Marshall game.

Wait, does that mean they do the in-game advertising and run that?
If so...look out, the board complainers who "want to watch the game, not hear constant advertisements, and also not pay high prices for tickets/food" are going to come out of the woodwork and go after them.

I imagine seeing the clusterfu*k the DJ and band were currently engaged in, was far more entertaining than what was on the court.

Let's just be honest here, you'll never achieve this.

If MU is winning, it's because the competition sucks.
When MU schedules a good OOC game 1:1, "Well, it isn't Alabama so I'm not going."
MU has those annoying commercials to drive the cost down for tickets and concessions.
But you want an economically crippled locale to pay more, all because the current model of revenue generation...annoys you?
Minus Donkey Lips and his cheesy car commercials, who else is going to pay big money to advertise and "do something I like" ??
Y'all wanted an outsider, from a real progran, which we got, and y'all dislike and dismiss his ideas after 1 year.

I know, the band, DJ, and PA ARE uncoordinated often, but I really don't notice it as much because I'm there to, you know, watch a football game.

When MU was winning, everyone looked elsewhere for whining and complaining and basic reasons to not come or enjoy the game.

This is college sports. It costs a lot money to even function at the lowest level and MU ain't there, far from it.
What some of you are asking for, is unattainable. Until WV fixes itself as an economy and until followers of the Mango Mussolini or the Weekend and Bernie's corpse can focus on this, it ain't changin' anytime soon.

I've heard enough PA guys over years to know that they can get the crowd pumped and lead the way in making the game day experience a positive one. PA guy is vastly different from on field ramblings and a would be DJ, who the students don't even pay attention to.

LOL! Asking for someone to coordinate our game day environment is unattainable? WOW! Must be something in the Schewey water because it seems every other school can do it. It doesn't cost one damn red cent to organize and come up with a plan. Not doing so is pure laziness and bush league. Come on man, lets not go over the ledge on this.

I encourage you to apply for the fan committee. Or hope you did. They need your wisdom.

I am too, but this is a simple fix that can add to the game day experience. Acting like it isn't important just isn't the answer. These all can add to and create additional traditions and experience which bring enjoyment to those who come to the game. Most importantly. Coordinating these things would cost next to nothing.
