What do you think of Huff now?!

A current coach and player both confirmed that on the way out the door, Huff encouraged every player to hit the portal.

Which coach and which player?

You say these things you need to be specific or else it's just BS you're claiming to know.

Huff was clearly liked by his players, enough to listen to him.
Encouraging a player to hit the transfer portal because you're leaving is what tons of coaches do and players often choose to do, because they got recruited by the coach, not the program...and why stay when the reason you're there, is gone?

Also, coaches tend to purposely recruit players and keep them on the bench, just to prevent them from going to a competing program, where they would start.
Huff's actions are PG-13 by comparison.

“Huff left the program in better shape than when he arrived”, several of his supporters a week ago.

Huff built a cult, not a program. He had his Marshall against everybody, but he meant the football team against everybody. He never cared about anything other than himself and his players.

He played the “school screwed me over” angle instead of being honest about the errors he made. Of course his players are going to back him if they believe he got screwed.

A head coach focusing on himself and the players?
Wow, sounds like conference title material right there.

Newsflash, every program in America has a cult...the players were recruited by the coach to play for the coach.
Minus Notre Dame, how many programs have players who don't play for the head coach? Not many.
Players would live and die by the words of their head coaches...this is nothing new, sorry.

He may have said that to the players and it wouldn't shock me if they believed him, once more, the players listen and play for the coaches, not you. You're not special. You whine and complain about a dropped pass or missed tackle. The coaches take them out of their situations and give them opportunity. Many don't have such consistent support in their lives. It's absolutely no surprise they'll listen to him.

As far as the "school screwed me over" angle, given the published details of his contract, he was clearly lying and screwed himself over for lesser money and an in shambles program.

None of your d*mn business. I don’t owe you anything.

I admit. I said that.

I stand by it though. Huff could have left with a significantly worse outcome at Marshall than what we were given.
You were wrong then and you’re still wrong.

Knowing players will listen to their coach, you are simply saying that Huff made the calculated decision to screw over every senior on the team that didn’t have the option for greener pastures and deprived them of one last game. He could have left reminding the team that they had an obligation to those players.

What a great guy.

Once more you swing for the fences and miss so terribly you fall over.

I'm not saying Huff's character is good or bad...I'm looking at this from the program's perspective.
MU is now the defending SBC champions and will be for the off-season and into next season.
Gibson has, basically, a clean slate to work with and can quickly fill his team with the players that fit his coaching schemes. Also to that point, he has basically assembled his coaching staff.
I'm hoping Gibson has an idea of what he wants and with a damn near depleted roster, he can fill in the gaps quickly and have success.

As for Huff telling players to leave, that's speculation. You weren't in on the texts, calls, team meetings, discussions, etc. your opinion (which it is) is as good as anyone else's.
Does it seem like he told them to go? Sure. Then again, how many of these players bounced from school to school prior to being at MU...and now that they've gone back into the portal, your feelings are hurt.

Also, you're giving the bowl game far too much credit, given the majority claim they're useless and a waste of time...and players feel the same since many opt to go pro before the bowl game, transfer, or simply don't go.

Huff didn't have to tell the players to leave. They were most likely going to be leaving anyway. 1) A mid major with limited NIL funds wins a conference championship. 2) The coach that brought them here leaves. 3)The potential for NIL money at a bigger school and a portal that allows the transfer with no strings. 4) A bowl season most couldn't care less about most seasons.

Cant Marshall fans just be happy we got a WV native coach that promises to "NEVER LEAVE"? Cant we just be happy most wanted the last coach gone? FFS I continue to read posters who point to this season being a lucky fluke. You cant make it up.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I think the bowl game issue is different.

Yes, most bowl games these days are somewhat meaningless in that you don't gain much by playing them, but you lose way more by dropping out, especially when both of the opponents ended accomplished seasons.

In this case, the optics were as bad as it gets. A conference champion paired against a rare version of Army would/should have been a really interesting game.

One nice thing is that after the soccer championship game, Marshall fans can start to calm down, have a great holiday, ease into the uneventful winter season, and chill out. Neither men’s nor women’s basketball is going to create much buzz this year.
