HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick announced Wednesday that the Thundering Herd and the Sun Belt Conference’s Appalachian State Mountaineers will meet on the gridiron in a home-and-home series in 2021 and 2022.
The two schools will play in Boone, N.C. on Sept. 25, 2021 and in Huntington on Sept. 17, 2022.
“It is great to get Appalachian State back onto our schedule and with that, we can give our fans another drivable road game,” Hamrick said. “Appalachian has a wonderful tradition and is already one of the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference.”
The Mountaineers, who are picked by Sporting News, Lindy’s and ESPN to win the Sun Belt this season, have had just two losing seasons in the last 30 years and won back-to-back-to-back FCS national titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007, amassing a 39-6 record.
"We're excited to renew our football series with Marshall,” said Appalachian State Director of Athletics Doug Gillin. “The Appalachian-Marshall rivalry still holds a special place in the hearts of Mountaineer fans. Many thanks to Marshall athletics director Mike Hamrick, associate A.D. David Steele and football coach Doc Holliday for working with us to make it happen."
The two schools have met 22 times, with Appalachian winning 14 – most of those Southern Conference dates. Marshall won the last meeting, a 50-17 non-conference affair in Huntington, in the 2002 season opener.
The 2021 game at ASU gives the Herd three non-conference dates that season, joining Navy in Annapolis, Md. (Sept. 4) and home against East Carolina (Sept. 11). In 2022, Marshall now has scheduled a home game with the Midshipmen (Sept. 3) in addition to an Edwards Stadium game against Appalachian.
